Linton and dated 1823 (lc) Oil on canvas 34 1/4 x 28 inches (87 x 71 cm) Provenance: The artist Commissioned by John Rushout, 2nd Baron Northwick (1770-1859), Northwick Park, near Moreton-in-Marsh, England Sale of the late Lord Northwick's extensive and magnificent collection of ancient and modern pictures, cabinet of miniatures and enamels, and other choice works of art, and the furniture, plate, wines and effects, at Thirlestaine House, Cheltenham, sold by auction by Mr. Phillips, July 26, 1859, and twenty-one subsequent days Private collection Spanierman Gallery, New York Linton's painting depicts a view on the grounds of Harrow Park at Harrow-on-the-Hill, northeast of London, owned from 1807 through the early 1820s by John Rushout, 2nd Baron Northwick (1770-1859), who commissioned the work. A governor of the Harrow School, Rushout allowed the students at the school to use the grounds for recreational purposes. Perhaps he commissioned the painting as a way of commemorating a place that was personally meaningful. After 1855, the painting joined the distinguished collection of important old master paintings (including Bassano, Bronzino, Caravaggio, Giotto, Durer, Leonardo da Vinci, Poussin, Raphael, Titian, and Veronese) and then-contemporary British paintings displayed by the Baron at Thirlestaine House, his Greek Revival home in Cheltenham, which he opened to the public.
