Description

[DICKENS, Charles (1812-70)] - William LINTON (1791-1876). Colossal Vestiges of the Older Nations. London: Longman, Green, longman, & Roberts, 1862. 8vo. Etched frontispiece of Stonehenge, folding plate of monoliths at the end, review slip loosely-inserted (plates and title spotted). Original red cloth decorated in blind and lettered in gilt (a few ink stains, some other light staining). Provenance: CHARLES DICKENS' COPY, with his armorial bookplate and bookseller's label: "From the Library of Charles Dickens, Gadshill Place, June, 1870." PRESENTATION COPY, the front free endpaper inscribed, "Charles Dickens Esq., with the Author's Compliments." There is a further indistinct inscription in pencil on the front pastedown. Although he wrote several travel books, William Linton is best remembered as a landscape painter. He was President of the Society of Artists in 1837.
