Kane accurately captured scenes of native American life in his drawings and paintings which are reproduced in fine chromolithography in the present work. Setting out from Toronto in 1845, he travelled almost alone through the west, viewing the Red River Settlement, the valley of the Saskatchewan, the Rocky Mountains, the Columbia River, the shores of Puget Sound and Vancouver Island, before returning in 1848.
