xvii, [1], 455, [8] pp. 8 chromolithographed plates, folding map with hand-coloring in outline, woodcuts in text. 8vo. Original pebbled orange cloth, covers stamped in blind, spine gilt. Custom chemise, red morocco-backed slipcase. Internally clean, front hinge cracked, light shelfwear, short tear to front joint, an excellent copy.

FIRST EDITION. Kane returned to Canada after four years study in Europe determined to capture scenes of native American life. He traveled almost alone through the west, viewing the Red River Settlement, the valley of the Saskatchewan, the Rocky Mountains, the Columbia River, the shores of Puget Sound; and Vancouver's Island. The work contains his journals converted to narrative form along with fine reproductions of his drawings and paintings.
