Frontispiece and 7 chromolithographic plates, folding map with hand-colouring in outline, woodcuts in text. (Occasional soiling and marginal staining, map with marginal chipping and and fraying, creased and sometime repaired and restored, 2 leaves pp.429-432 with minor corner restoration, last leaf with short marginal tear repaired without loss.) Red crushed morocco by Bayntun Riviere, gilt spine, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt (spine very faintly faded).

FIRST EDITION OF THIS CANADIAN TRAVELOGUE. Kane accurately captured scenes of native American life in his drawings and paintings which are reproduced in fine chromolithography in the present work. Setting out from Toronto in 1845, he travelled almost alone through the west, viewing the Red River Settlement, the valley of the Saskatchewan, the Rocky Mountains, the Columbia River, the shores of Puget Sound and Vancouver Island, before returning in 1848.
