[...] Une belle occasion de perdue pour la NRF". Bien peu nombreux étaient en effet "ceux qui, à l'époque, ont défendu Joyce sans aucune arrière-pensée et sans revirement" (Pierre Guglielmina). Est: €500 - €600

[JOYCE JAMES]: (1882-1941) Irish novelist and poet. An unusual partially printed document, completed and signed on behalf of Joyce in the hand of an administrative agent, four pages, 4to, Paris, 21st April 1939, in French. The official Reseau Telephonique de Paris (Paris Telephone Network) document is Joyce's contract to have a telephone line installed at 34 rue des Vignes in Paris for an annual fee of six hundred and sixty francs, the head of the first page stamped Transfert ('Transfer') and a further stamp with manuscript insertions to the third page confirming that the document replaces an earlier commitment to have a telephone line at 7 rue Edmond Valentin and that the minimum duration of the subscription is still in place. The foot of the third page is signed on behalf of Joyce with the observation 'Lu et accepté' (Translation: 'Read and accepted'). A moving document relating to Joyce's last private residence in Paris. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG James Joyce first came to Paris in July 1920 and would reside in the French capital for almost two decades, although the writer never bought a home of his own. Joyce's health problems afflicted him throughout his Paris years and despite over a dozen eye operations his vision severely declined and by the 1930s he was practically blind, making the telephone an important method of communication and explaining why he was unable to sign the present document. Joyce lived in an elegant apartment at 7 rue Edmond Valentin, close to the River Seine and Eiffel Tower, for five years from February 1935 until April 1939 before moving into a smaller apartment (although blessed with a lot of natural light) at 34 rue des Vignes on 15th April 1939. Finnegans Wake was published whilst Joyce was living in the apartment, which he would leave after six months in mid-October 1939. Following the fall of France in 1940 Joyce and his family travelled to Zurich to flee the Nazi occupation. On 11th January 1941 Joyce underwent surgery and fell into a coma the next day, awaking briefly at 2 am on 13th January before dying fifteen minutes later.

JOYCE JAMES: (1882-1941) Irish Novelist. Regarded as one of the more influential writers of the 20th century, he is best known for his work Ulysses (1922). A fine A.L.S., `James Joyce, ´two pages, oblong small 8vo card, Paris, n.d., [December 1925 - early 1926], on his personal printed stationery card, bearing to the upper right corner his Parisian address ''2, Square Robiac, 192 Rue de Grenelle VII'', to Mr. Suter, in French. Joyce annotates beneath his printed address a telephone `Tel - Segur 95-20'', and states 'Dear Suter, if Madame Suter is in Paris, maybe she could come here for tea time on Wednesday at 4 or 4h30. My wife wishes to talk to her - not about the servants. If not, would you give me a telephone call?´ Joyce further refers to his health problems saying `How are you? Hope you are well. I have suffered a seventh surgery. It was rather bad this time.´ Joyce had multiple eye-operations during his life. He refers here to the two operations he had in December 1925. Creasing to the left border and upper right corner, not affecting the text and signature, otherwise G Auguste Suter (1887-1965) Swiss Sculptor. Considered one of the greatest Swiss sculptors of all time. Suter and Joyce shared a close and friendly relationship. Suter´s clay sculpture of James Joyce did not survive WWII. Suter´s wife, a professional singer, gave singing lessons to Joyce´s daughter Lucia.

New York: Limited Editions Club, 1935. 4to (298 x 230 mm). 6 softground etched plates, with 20 illustrations of preliminary sketches for the etchings on variously sized blue and yellow paper, all by Matisse. Publisher's cloth stamped with abstract time-piece design including Matisse's Nausicaa embossed in gold on the front cover, spine decorated in gilt, clean, hinges started, publisher's slipcase, reinforced at upper and lower panels, custom morocco backed folding box. Provenance: Paul and Ruth Bishop (bookplate to pastedown). A FINE COLLABORATION BETWEEN TWO OF THE GREAT LITERARY AND ARTISTIC FIGURES OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY, number 1449 of 1500 copies signed by Matisse, and a masterpiece of 20th-century book design and illustration. Curiously, Matisse based his drawings on Homer's Odyssey, leading to speculation he never read the book he was supposed to illustrate. Reportedly, Joyce was so incensed that he stopped signing the edition, making the copies signed by both exceedingly rare. However, it's likely that the story is apocryphal, as the contract Joyce signed was to sign 250 copies, all that his poor eyesight would allow him to manage. The Artist and the Book 197. In his book review for the New York Times (11 January 1931), Herbert Matthews says this fragment is 'an attempt to enrich and refashion the English language, and as such is highly stimulating and carries the reader through a form of mental gymnastics which is not without its profit and amusement.' However, he admits, 'after an honest and patient effort, backed by a previous reading of all of Mr. Joyce's work, 'Haveth Childers Everywhere' still remained absolutely incomprehensible,' and he expresses concern that 'Mr. Joyce has gone a little further on the path he is hewing for himself toward what seems to be complete linguistic chaos.' JOYCE, James Augustine Aloysius (1882-1941). Ulysses. Hamburg: Odyssey Press, 1932. Author's presentation copy to Gustav Zumsteg, son of Hulda Zumsteg, the notable proprietors of the famous Kronenhalle restaurant in Zürich, just a few days before Joyce's death. Joyce's travels over continental Europe often took him to Zürich, which he first visited in 1904. He wrote portions of Ulysses while in the city during the First World War, and later 'Work in Progress', or Finnegans Wake, as it came to be known. With the invasion of France in 1940, Joyce managed to secure exile in Zürich, arriving there on 17 December 1940. He was a frequent visitor to the Kronenhalle; in an interview with the New York Times in 1987, Gustav Zumsteg claimed that, 'Joyce lived here for eight years ... He came here every day. And he left this place to die' (https://www.nytimes. com/1987/01/04/travel/zurich-s-haven-of-genius-and-joviality.html). The present lot is inscribed 'New Year 1941'; just a few days later, Joyce was struck down with acute abdominal pains, but after an operation to remove a perforated duodenal ulcer, never suffucently recovered, and passed away on 13 January. The impact of Joyce's Ulysses was revolutionary in its own time, and the book continues to stand as the single most significant English language novel of the last century. The complexity of it is revealed in the statement on verso of the present lot's title: 'The present edition may be regarded as the deifnitive standard edition, as it has been specially revised, at the author's request, by Stuart Gilbert'. It predates the first edition to be printed in England by 4 years. Slocum and Cahoon 20 ('generally considered to be the most accurate and authoritative text'). 2 volumes, octavo (175 x 111mm). Standard Odyssey edition. Half-titles and final blanks in both vols. Contemporary half roan over paper-covered boards (extremities lightly rubbed, joints more heavily). Provenance: author's presentation copy (inscribed in green ink on half-title of vol. I, 'With many thanks and best wishes ... Zurich New Year 1941' to:) – Gustav Zumsteg (1915- 2005). (2)

JOYCE JAMES : (1882-1941) Irish Novelist and Poet. Widely regarded as one of the most influential authors of the 20th century, and best known for his work Ulysses (1922). Very rare A.L.S., James Joyce, one page, small 8vo, Paris, 18th May 1926, to Miss Bollach. Joyce writes to Lily Bollach who worked with Joyce on some of his works, the present letter most probably referring to his manuscript of Work in Progress, which would be later re-named Finnegan Wake. Joyce in a permanent linguistic search states in part `..It is all my fault for copying out of an earlier version. I am sorry to have put you to unnecessary trouble.´ and further about corrections to add, saying `Please read «noblesse…» and later «during alleged recent act of our chief magistrates as required by statues». For Mockmacmahonson in the other place read «Mockmacmahovitch» and after the words.. The verse begin, correctly as you say «Day shirker»´ The 8vo opened letter being a Pneumatique letter, folded, hand-addressed by Joyce to the verso, also postmarked and post-stamped. Overall age wear. G £10000-15000 Finnegans Wake is a work of fiction by Joyce, his final work. Considered one of the most difficult works of fiction in the English language. Written in Paris over a period of seventeen years and published in 1939, only two years before Joyce´s death.

JOYCE, James (1882-1941). Ulysses. Paris: Shakespeare and Company, 1922. The frst edition in original wrappers, copy no. 112 of 150 copies, of one of the most formative novels of English-language modernism. This issue, printed on larger, heavier paper, is the hardest to fnd in such attractive condition. The complexities of its formal structure, its linguistic inventiveness and its imaginative cohesion of historical sources have made Ulysses the most diligently studied work of modern literature in English. Although the tumultuous publication nearly bankrupted Sylvia Beach, owner of Shakespeare & Co, her clever marketing won the day, with reviews of the novel’s salaciousness prompting an avalanche of orders. All three subscription tiers were sold out by August. Cyril Connolly, while criticizing Joyce’s “preference for language rather than people,” nevertheless could not reject the novel’s immense intellectual weight: “somehow it does achieve greatness like a ruined temple soaring from a jungle—and should be judged perhaps as a poem, a festival of the imagination.” This is copy no. 112 of 150 printed on verge d’Arches. The Modern Movement 42; Slocum & Cahoon A17. Quarto (264 x 204mm). Original “Greek fag” blue printed wrappers (minor wear to edges; some very neat expert restoration to the spine and extremities); in custom box with plexi window. Provenance: The Sunwise Turn, Inc (avant-garde bookshop co-founded by Madge Jenison and Mary Horgan Mowbray-Clarke; bookplate on colophon).

First edition, third variant binding. Slocum and Cahoon record that 509 copies of the first edition were printed. Of these, fewer than 100 copies appeared in the first variant binding (with thick laid endpapers). The priority of the second and third variants is undetermined. Joyce’s first book, consisting of thirty-six poems, was rejected by both Grant Richards and Constable, but was eventually published – at the urging of Arthur Symons – by Elkin Mathews, who had previously published works by Yeats and Synge. 16mo; original green cloth lettered in gilt on front and spine; thin, near-transparent endpapers with traces of former ownership signature, since removed; pages evenly yellowed as usual. Cloth is clean; light edge wear; spine slightly sunned. A very good copy of Joyce’s first book . BOOKS

[LIMITED EDITIONS CLUB]. MATISSE, Henri, illustrator (1869-1954). – JOYCE, James (1882-1941). Ulysses. With an introduction by Stuart Gilbert. New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1935. 4°. 6 etchings and 20 reproductions of preliminary drawings by MATISSE. Original brown cloth, gilt-decorated on front cover and spine (lacking slipcase, some light soiling). LIMITED EDITION, ONE OF ONLY 250 COPIES SIGNED BY BOTH MATISSE AND JOYCE, number 365 from a total edition of 1500 copies. "One of the very few American livres de peintres issued before World War II. According to George Macy, who undertook this only American publication of Matisse's illustrations, he asked the artist how many etchings the latter could provide for five thousand dollars. The artist chose to take six subjects from Homer's Odyssey" (Riva Castleman, A Century of Artists Books, pp.35, 61). When asked why he decided to illustrate the Calypso, Aelous, Cyclops, Nausicaa, Circe and Ithaca episodes of the classic poem rather than events from Joyce's novel, Matisse replied that it was because he had not read Joyce's Ulysses. A FINE COLLABORATION BETWEEN ARGUABLY THE GREATEST WRITER AND THE GREATEST ARTIST OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY. The American Livre de Peintre 32; The Artist and the Book 197.

*JOYCE, James, 1882-1941. E.Br.m.U. Paris 9.II.1927. 1 S. gr.-4°. Februar) dankt. "... Many thanks for your kind telegram on my birthday. It was very good of you to remember me ... Have you settled down altogether in Nice or is there any likelihood of your passing through Paris at any time: We might go south but my wife does not like Nice though I found it quite pleasant. We spent the summer at Ostende. Giorgio has taken up singing again. It is now fixed that he certainly has not a bass but a baritone or robust tenor. Lucia" (seine Tochter) "has danced in public here and in Brussels and is starting to teach. Tuohy was here for about two months (it seemed two years) to finish my face which will adorn the May salon. Thank goodness he left today. We still go to the Trianon where the female dog Cascade continues to proliferate. My eyesight seems to be getting better lentissimamente. Did you set any of those verses? I enclose copy of a protest issued on my birthday to the French, English and American press ..."
