      W. FREDERICK JARVIS (1898-1966) Altadena Poppies Altadena California Oil on canvas 28in. x 36in. Signed lower left In the early days of Altadena, the hills and fields below the foot of Echo Mountain were covered with poppies, much to the delight of all who laid eyes on them. The Spanish, when sailing up and down the newly-discovered coast, looked inland and saw the "flame" of orange-yellow poppies spread upon the hillsides. This was the "land of fire." They said the alter cloth of San Pascal was spread upon the hills and with devotional spirit the explorers disembarked from their ships to worship on the shore. An Indian legend says the presence of gold in the earth is due to the petals that have fallen year after year, and sank into the soil. It is now difficult to recognize the area these golden flowers once inhabited. The only indication left of the stunning beauty of the Altadena poppy are street names like Poppyfield Drive, old postcards from the early 1900s, and the few surviving paintings like Jarvis's Altadena Poppies Altadena California. W. FREDERICK JARVIS (1898-1966) Untitled West Texas Landscape Watercolor 14in. x 20in. Signed lower left Frederick Jarvis was an accomplished watercolorist, as well as an oil painter. This composition, keyed to the color yellow, uses the clump of prickly pear cactus on the lower left, and the bare bush on the lower right going off the page, to reinforce the illusion of depth. The rock ledge to the left and right also contribute to the perception of depth in the painting.

      W. FREDERICK JARVIS (1898-1966) Early Morning Near Pasadena California, 1920s Oil on canvas 25in. x 30in. Signed lower left Titled verso A tour-de-force California landscape by Frederick Jarvis. This painting exhibits a wonderful tone and balance in both composition and color. In Jarvis's brochure for his Texas School of Painting, the following statement is made: " Jarvis has developed a color combination that is wholly and exclusively his own." This refers to the popular use at that time of scientific color theory and the use of "set palettes" for painting. While Jarvis's system is undoubtedly lost, we can see its effect, a harmonious tone and balance to this painting where every color seems to fit.
