GUSTAV JAHN (1879-1919) HOHE TAUERN. Circa 1900. 43 1/2x30 inches, 110 1/2x76 1/4 cm. K.K. Hof, Vienna. Condition B: repaired tears at edges, some into image; replaced losses, slight foxing and small replaced losses in margins. Gustav Jahn was a painter and poster designer as well as an avid mountaineer. Born and raised in Vienna, he was a star pupil at the Academy of Fine Arts. In addition to his paintings, he also designed more than two dozen posters for the Austrian State Railway. For many years, he provided illustrations for the catalogues of the Viennese sporting goods store Mitzi Langer, and many of his images of skiers and mountaineers graced their covers. Twelve of Jahn's large alpine landscape paintings were used to decorate the interior of the Austrian Government Building at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. He died in a mountaineering accident on August 17, 1919. Many of Jahn's posters are difficult to date and we are only able to do so approximately via the train timetables.

As a painter his specialties were mountain landscapes and alpine views. In addition to his paintings he also designed more than two dozen posters for the Austrian State Railway. For many years he also provided illustrations for the catalogues of the Viennese sporting goods store Mitzi Langer, and many of his images of skier and mountaineers graced the cover of their catalogues. Jahn, Georg Jüdische Händler Jüdische Händler. Radierung und Kaltnadel auf chamoisfarbenem Van Gelder Zonen-Bütten. 37,7 x 49 cm (Plattenrand); 47,7 x 59 cm (Blattgröße). Signiert, datiert und als 2. Probedr.(uck) bezeichnet. (19)03. Der Maler und Graphiker Georg Jahn war 1883/88 an der Porzellanmanufaktur in Meissen als Maler tätig, besuchte 1888/90 die Dresdner Akademie und 1890/91 die Weimarer Kunstschule. Nach Aufenthalten in Berlin, Leipzig und München und längerer Tätigkeit als Illustrator und Porträtist ließ sich Jahn 1897 in Loschwitz nieder. Prachtvoller, kräftiger und gratiger Probedruck mit ausdrucksstarkem Plattenton und breitem Rand. An den oberen Ecken minimal berieben, Papier gebräunt und stockfleckig, insgesamt jedoch guter Gesamteindruck.
