      SIR EDWARD AUGUSTUS INGLEFIELD (BRITISH NAVAL SCHOOL, 1820-1894) Intelligence [Before Trafalgar] Watercolour Initialled 'E.A.I.' (lower left), and inscribed 'Intelligence' (lower right); with artist's inscription to verso reading Lord Nelson's Inshore Squadron giving him the "Intelligence" that the French Fleet hath put to sea E.A. Inglefield; and ?owner's name, Grenville 12.5 x 17in. (32 x 43cm.) Inglefield led one of the earliest expeditions to discover the fate of the missing arctic explorer, Sir John Franklin, setting out in July 1852 in command of Lady Franklin's private steamer, Isabel. Upon reaching the Arctic, he took the opportunity to survey Greenland's west coast and much of Baffin Island's eastern coast. He retired in 1885 and devoted his time to paintings and watercolours, becoming Chairman of the Arts Section of the Chelsea Naval Exhibition of 1891, at which he also exhibited. ++Rub marks to margins, some mild spotting in sky, old crease extending from top right to centre left, unexamined out of frame. Framed size 20.75 x 24.5in.

With 4 lithographed plates (incl. 2 chromolithographed and 1 folding panorama); large folding map. Original blue cloth, spine gilt-lettered, edges untrimmed. Two old stub repairs to map, hinges cracked, wear to binding at spine and corners. Provenance: Thomas Bacon (presentation inscription, armorial bookplate); Andrew Taylor (bookplate). FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, boldly inscribed on the front free endpaper: "From the Author to Revd T. Bacon." Inglefield commanded Lady Franklin's private steamer Isabel for this expedition. He explored Smith Sound for the first time since it had been named by William Baffin and on his return was awarded the gold medal of the Royal Geographical Society.
