FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, boldly inscribed on the front free endpaper: "From the Author to Revd T. Bacon." Inglefield commanded Lady Franklin's private steamer Isabel for this expedition. He explored Smith Sound for the first time since it had been named by William Baffin and on his return was awarded the gold medal of the Royal Geographical Society.
