James Howe of Skirling (Scottish,1780-1836) The Old Edinburgh Market at Night oil on canvas h:53 w:70 cm Provenance: Private collection, UK. Other Notes: James Howe was born in Skirling, Peebleshire, in 1780. He left for Edinburgh determined to pursue a career as an artist. His initial foray into the profession came as an apprentice carriage and house painter, a path also pursued by his fellow artists Alexander Runciman and Jacob More. Howe absolutely loved horses, and his ability to portray them gained him wealthy landowning patrons. The Earl of Buchan, a patron, described him as "a second Stubbs in embryo". Howe exhibited at the Society of Artists. Although a very productive artist in his day, James Howe was never a member of the Royal Scottish Academy. His biography was written by Alexander D Cameron, The Man Who Loved to Paint Horses. James Howe 1780-1836 (Aberdeen University Press 1986). Howe was a valuable chronicler of a country way of life that has sadly now vanished - village fairs, horse races, street markets, gypsy fairs and revelries, and his work is invaluable as a historical record. Howe's work is represented in the Edinburgh Museums and Galleries.
