Notes

Acknowledged as Scotland's earliest sporting artist Howe was born in Stirling and frequently exhibited equestrian subjects in Edinburgh. Two sets of engravings after his portraits were published in 1824 and 1832. He also produced a series of portraits for British Domestic Animals, published by the Highland Society of Scotland. Howe is best remembered for his falconry picture, Mr. Flemming of Barochan Castle, with John Anderson, in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. By repute he visited London only once, in order to paint the horses in the Royal Mews.
