ATTRIBUTED TO JOHN THEODORE HEINS (1697-1756) PORTRAIT OF THE REVEREND JOHN CLUBBE (c.1703-1773) Oil on canvas, unframed (66cm x 51cm) The Rev John Clubbe was the vicar of the parish of Whatfield in Suffolk and a satirical writer. He was a close friend of the artist Thomas Gainsborough, who painted his portrait twice. The present work was offered as 'Circle of Gainsborough' at Sotheby's on 31st May 1995 (lot 254)

Attributed to John Theodore Heins Sr. (1697-1756 Norwich) Portrait of a gentleman, traditionally identified as Jonas Hanway (Hanaway) Half length with his hand on an open book, oil on canvas, 96 x 76cm (373/4 x 30in) Provenance Bequeathed to me by J.P. Cook Esq, signed James Pugh. (according to label on reverse) thence by descent. Jonas Hanway (sometimes spelt Hanaway) (b.1712, d. 1786), is generally credited with being the first gentleman to carry an umbrella in England. He came under considerable ridicule and antagonism, particularly from sedan-chair carriers who saw it as a threat to their trade. Indeed umbrellas were sometimes referred to as a "Hanway"

John Harvey was listed in 'Norfolk Families' as being a linen draper in London. John Harvey (1666-1742) was thought to be the founder of the Norwich dynasty, being originally born in Beachamwell. He was a worsted weaver and admitted as a Freeman of the city in 1695. In 1710 he was voted the æMerchant of St ClementsÆ. He started the family tradition of being appointed to great office being Sheriff in 1720, an Alderman in 1722 and Mayor in 1727.
