Circle of JOHN THEODORE (DIRK) HEINS Snr (1697-1756) Portrait of a Gentleman, quarter length, wearing a white Cravat and brown Jacket oil on canvas 30 x 25in (76.2 X 63.5cm) The sitter has in the past been traditionally identified as the Earl of Buckingham. The title 'Earl of Buckingham' was created in 1746 for John Hobart. He had previously served as Treasurer at the Chamber, Captain for the Honorable Board of Gentleman Pensioners and Lord Lieutenant of Norfolk. A 1743 portrait by Heins of John Hobart (as an elder man) is recorded
