"The Open Polar Sea" By Isaac Hayes 1885

    Est: $200 - $400

Presented in this lot is "The Open Sea" by Isaac I. Hayes, M.D., 1885, First Edition, David McKay publisher, Philadelphia, over 30 illustrations. American explorer and physician Isaac Israel Hayes (1832-1881) on early exploration of the North Pole and the Arctic Ocean. Telling the story of an expedition led by Hayes on the schooner "United States" in 1860, the book begins with the plans and funding of the trip, then describes the variety of places visited by the crew, including the landscapes, indigenous people, flora and fauna, climate and weather, and more, ending with the trip home to Boston, Massachusetts in 1861. This account of the expedition, first published in 1866, was compiled from his journals. Having left Boston in a small schooner so overloaded with equipment that a passenger could lean over the deck rail and touch the sea, Hayes and his crew almost faced shipwreck off Nova Scotia and regularly saw their cabins flooded on their way to Greenland, where, in calmer weather, they encountered the first palatial ice floes. Illustrations by American artist F.O.C. Darley featured throughout, including a frontispiece depicting a bear hunt. The grey cloth bound gold gilt stamped illustrated hardcover is in nice condition, slight scuffing noted on cover edges, loose spine at hinges. Intact pages exhibit age tanning and foxing, chapter 39 pages bent at bottom. Measures 5.5"W x 7.5"L x 1.25"D, weight is 1lb, 2oz.

    Est: $80 - $100

(1832-1881) American explorer who led an Arctic expedition aimed at proving the existence of open seas around the North Pole. A.L.S. ‘I. I. Hayes', 1p. 8vo., New York, date is illegible. Hayes writes a few lines thanking someone for pushing the date of his lecture back. Mailing folds, light foxing, trivial hole at the top left which does not intrude on text. Very good.

Rare Isaac Israel Hayes Autograph Letter Signed

    Est: $100 - $200

HAYES, Isaac Israel Hayes (1832-1881) was an American Arctic explorer, physician, and politician, who was appointed as the commanding officer at Satterlee General Hospital during the American Civil War, and was then elected, post-war, to the New York State Assembly. His book, The Open Polar Sea: A Narrative of a Voyage of Discovery towards the North Pole, in the Schooner United States, was published in 1867. Autograph Letter Signed "I.I. Hayes" 1pp. octavo, and reads in part: "...Please send by noon one hundred this morning, hundreds if you can spare them. I want as many as possible of my letter & work. As for pay I will settle when I come down not having the case now by me..." Fine condition. Hayes enrolled as a surgeon with the Union Army. In 1862, he was placed in command of the Satterlee General Hospital, a sprawling 4,500-bed military hospital in Philadelphia which saw spikes in patients following the Second Battle of Bull Run and Battle of Gettysburg, the latter of which was responsible for "swelling the hospital population to more than 6,000" after "the greatest number of wounded were admitted to the hospital in a single month" during the summer of 1863. Rendering care to as many as 50,000 sick and wounded during the time this hospital was open, the physicians and nurses under Hayes lost only 260 patients between the time of the hospital's opening and closure, a significant achievement when considering the challenges they faced in treating not only the sheer volume of patients they were required to process, but in doing so while employing relatively rudimentary medical care procedures and sanitation practices.

1431. ISAAC ISRAEL HAYES (1832-1881) American explorer who led an Arctic expedition aimed at proving the existence of open seas around the North Pole. Scarce partly-printed D.S. "I.I. Hayes" as Surgeon U.S.C. in Charge of Hospital, 1p, oblong 4to, Satterlee U.S.A. General Hospital, West Philadelphia, Oct. 19, 1864. A standard military form entitled "Partial Descriptive List and Account of Pay and Clothing", covering hospital patient "Private George Bowman-Company A-7th Regiment R.I Vols...Admitted May 7, 64," and informing Major Richie that Bowman's pay account should "include August 31, 1864". Signed by Hayes beneath a pre-printed statement certifying: "...that the above is a correct Transcript from the Records of the Satterlee U.S.A. Hospital, West Philadelphia, Pa.". Far outer marginal minor defects, otherwise quite good. Hayes is most uncommon during this period while in charge of Satterlee. Private George Bowman enrolled on July 21, 1862 at Warwick, Rhode Island and was mustered into the service on September 4th. He undoubtedly recovered from his hospital stay as he mustered out on June 9, 1865. $350-450

    Est: $800 - $1,200

ISAAC I. HAYES (1832-1881) American explorer who led an Arctic expedition aimed at proving the existence of open seas around the North Pole. Uncommon, very fine content A.L.S. "I. I. Hayes ", 4pp. 8vo., New York, Aug. 7, 1878, to James Gordon Bennett, Jr., owner and editor of The New York Herald, who, at this time, was involved in supporting George Washington de Long's outfitting an expedition to the Arctic. In part: "...When the map which you were so good as to send me yesterday came to hand I jumped at once to the conclusion that is was the proof of a map intended for publication. Afterward I saw that is was taken from a book. It is in the main correct, but contains some errors of established fact calculated to mislead. I will prepare a map of the same size which I will send to you along with this one, which will more clearly show what I mean. I have precious little confidence in schemes founded upon guessing. There are certain reasonable analogies of physical geography what we may follow, but it is well to get what facts we can. On the whole this map is good. Allow me to merely suggest whether a map, with sufficient text, may not be well for insertion at some prefatory time, in the Herald. Entitled something as follows: 'Proposed routs of the Bennett- North Pole Expeditions'. I will get from the Geol. Society Nares' Book and will submit to you a criticism of it...Yesterday I wrote letters which will speedily place you in communication with the Ship owners of Newfoundland and the makers of convenient food. I shall be very glad to know about the Donottas [?]; and will in that as in all things have acquired, and will always give you my views with great pleasure, for I feel a very deep interest in the success of a truly great undertaking... ". Scottish explorer Sir George Nares made an historic oceanographic voyage around the world only a few years earlier (1872-74), and, at the conclusion of that voyage, released a 50-volume report to the sponsors of the project, the Geographical Society no doubt one of them. In a postscript, he adds: "I shall also be glad to learn if Mr. Churchill obtained anything new from the whalers... ". With Bennett's backing, De Long succeeded in mounting an expedition, and embarked for the Arctic aboard the Jeannette on July 8, 1879. On June 13, 1881, the Jeannette was crushed in ice and broke in two, just north of Siberia. With two cutters and one whale boat, the party divided into three groups and attempted to reach land. Only one of the groups succeeded in reaching the coast of Siberia, with one of the unfortunate groups, led by De Long, all died of starvation. Creases, a bit of soiling, else very good condition, and rare with this superb association and content. $800-1,200
