Description

1431. ISAAC ISRAEL HAYES (1832-1881) American explorer who led an Arctic expedition aimed at proving the existence of open seas around the North Pole. Scarce partly-printed D.S. "I.I. Hayes" as Surgeon U.S.C. in Charge of Hospital, 1p, oblong 4to, Satterlee U.S.A. General Hospital, West Philadelphia, Oct. 19, 1864. A standard military form entitled "Partial Descriptive List and Account of Pay and Clothing", covering hospital patient "Private George Bowman-Company A-7th Regiment R.I Vols...Admitted May 7, 64," and informing Major Richie that Bowman's pay account should "include August 31, 1864". Signed by Hayes beneath a pre-printed statement certifying: "...that the above is a correct Transcript from the Records of the Satterlee U.S.A. Hospital, West Philadelphia, Pa.". Far outer marginal minor defects, otherwise quite good. Hayes is most uncommon during this period while in charge of Satterlee. Private George Bowman enrolled on July 21, 1862 at Warwick, Rhode Island and was mustered into the service on September 4th. He undoubtedly recovered from his hospital stay as he mustered out on June 9, 1865. $350-450
