Chester Charles Harding (1792-1866) Oil of Dodge

      Est: $2,000 - $3,000

This is an original Chester (Charles) Harding (1792 – 1866) oil painting of John C. Dodge dated circa 1849 from the Sjaardema Art Collection. Chester Harding was born in 1792, in Conway, Massachusetts, the fourth of 12 children. He married Caroline Woodruff and in 1815, he was forced to leave New York State due to mounting debts. After his family joined him in Pittsburgh around 1818, he was introduced to portraiture by an itinerant artist named Nelson. Largely self-taught, he achieved some success before moving to Kentucky and then felt the influence of Matthew Jouett, a slightly older artist working in the manner of Gilbert Stuart. In the coming years, he painted in Kentucky, Ohio, Missouri, and Washington, D.C. During the winter of 1819-1820 he traveled to Philadelphia for two months of study at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He received notoriety for his portrait of the 90-year-old Daniel Boone, which was then engraved by several printmakers. In 1823, in Boston he received astounding reception and commissions and later moved to Northampton, Massachusetts in preparation for his anticapited trip to Europe. In London, he worked with artists Charles Robert Leslie and Sir Thomas Lawrence as well as painting for the Royal family. He later sent for his family to join him in Glasgow, Scotland. In 1830, he became an important and visible force in the Boston art world, largely through his ownership of a studio building that was the site of many important exhibitions. Much of each year was spent on the road, executing portraits in New York, Louisiana, Kentucky, and points in between. In all, he is thought to have painted over 1000 portraits. After the death of his wife in 1845, he made a second, nine-month visit to Europe. Thereafter, he painted less, though never giving up his brushes entirely. His interests late in life gravitated toward landscape architecture and fishing. He died in Boston in 1866. The back of the original painting was signed “Portrait of J.C. Dodge for Mabel Dodge Bullis (Picture of Father)”. John C. Dodge was born in Peterborough, New Hampshire in circa 1820, with this portrait painted in the 1840s. He arrived in San Francisco, California in the 1840s. He was a merchant in hardware with his brother Henry Dodge and also worked in real estate. He retired in San Rafael with vacation home in Bolinas, CA. in 1876, and later died in circa 1900. The painting was found and identified as being her father, John C. Dodge, by Chester Charles Harding by Mabel Dodge Bullis (1883-1982) in San Rafael / Bolinas. Mabel Dodge Bullis authored a 1974, book on their family history. John C. Dodge was relative to Henry Dodge (1782-1867) noted American politician and military officer. This painting is an oil on board showing beautiful detail and being well kept. The oil has some crackling and crazing from its very early age, but it doesn’t appear to have much if any loss. There is a very small blemish lower left and a mark at the forehead. The piece is in an original very early rare gold gilt wood frame with a large grandious size and design, being one, if not the best, antique 19th Century frame we have ever offered for sale. The frame is well kept, mostly being in good condition with some slight chipping but overall outstanding in looks and a heavy weight. Provenance: From the Henry and Jean Sjaardema Art Collection. Signature could be behind, frame, but is considered unsigned, identified by original family and confirmed by Sjaardema's expert historic experience. The artwork board measures 19.75” by 15 3/8” and the frame is 33.5” by 29.5”.*

    • Chester Harding. Portrait of Luther Lawrence, c. 1832.
      Jul. 10, 2021

Chester Harding. Portrait of Luther Lawrence, c. 1832.

      Est: $6,000 - $12,000

Chester Harding (American, 1792-1866) Portrait of Luther Lawrence, c. 1832. Oil on canvas, 35 1/2 x 28 1/2 inches; within original gilt, carved and molded frame. Luther Lawrence (1778-1839) was born in Groton, Massachusetts, on September 28, 1778, the oldest of four sons sired by Revolutionary patriot Major Samuel Lawrence, all of whom became influential figures in American history. An 1801 graduate of Harvard, Lawrence first embarked on an impressive legal career, working closely with Daniel Webster on important court cases, and then turned to a political career as a member of the Federalist and later, the Whig party. He was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1812, and became Speaker in 1822. In 1833 he relocated to newly established Lowell to oversee the mill operations of the Lawrence family's Middlesex Mills. In 1838 he was elected the second mayor of that growing city and reelected mayor the following year. His distinguished career was cut short by a tragic accident on April 17, 1839. While showing visitors around one of their mills, he tripped over a rope and fell into a wheel pit, his head hitting the wheel, and he expired shortly thereafter. Chester Harding was born in Conway, Massachusetts, and apprenticed as a turner, but after being introduced to painting by an itinerant, traveling portrait painter, he took up the profession. Relocating to Pittsburgh and later Kentucky during the late 1810s, he painted numerous portraits of the early settlers of the Ohio Valley. He then studied at the Philadelphia Academy of Design and resumed his career in St. Louis, Missouri, before traveling to London in 1823, where he enjoyed success. He established a studio in Boston in 1826, where he worked until 1843, when he returned to England for a few years and then again home to Boston. Harding was one of the most successful American portrait painters of his era, and many important public figures sat for him during his career. In his autobiography, Harding wrote that the "most liberal patronage I have enjoyed as been, perhaps, from the Lawrences. I have painted all of them, and many of their children. My full-length portrait of Amos Lawrence [Luther's younger brother] I consider the best thing I have ever done in my whole artistic career. I have also painted a full-length of Abbott Lawrence." They now hang in the Williams College Museum of Art and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, respectively. This fine portrait of eldest brother Lawrence was painted by Harding about thirteen years prior to the abovementioned full-length portraits of his partner-brothers (both done in 1845) and its careful and sensitive delineation of the sitter and his character of evidence of the affection that the artist held for the sitter and his family.

Exh. cat. National Portrait Gallery, Washington, D.C.; J. B. Speed Art Museum, Louisville, Kentucky. Washington, D.C., 1985. Notes: "I need not extol John McDonnell's catering. He is too well known in that particular to make it at all necessary. From the opening of the old St. Charles Hotel, in New Orleans, his early connection with Pass Christian, the City Hotel, in Natchez, to his present admirable restaurant in Common street (no. 147), he has ever proved himself a most excellent and bountiful provider of everything good to eat and drink." --"Letter from the Lakefront", Special Correspondence, Ocean Springs, Miss., June 8, 1856 As the caption above states, the sitter of this portrait, John McDonnell, was the ultimate hotelier/restauranteur, the consummate host, well regarded for the luxury resorts he established. In 1837 McDonnell married Henrietta Tarascon Gilly (see lot 63) and launched the famous St. Charles Hotel, one of the first great hotels in the United States that preceded the Astor. A. Oakley Hall, later Mayor of New York City, hailed the hotel- "a palace of creature comforts; a college for the study of human nature, and an exchange for money and appetite" on par with an "exchange in London" or a "Palace in St. Petersburg." Both McDonnell's daughters Cora Ann and Alice (1840-1848), pictured in lot 62 with their mother, were born in the hotel, and resided there at the time they sat for their portrait by Harding- a probable guest of the St. Charles. The Carrollton Hotel in New Orleans on the waterfront at the terminus of the St. Charles rail line and the New Brighton Hotel in Pass Christian followed with equal accolades. According to reviews, the former was situated on a four acres garden with a racetrack, at which dinner was prepared nightly after the races. Additional resorts were established along the Gulf and Mississippi River in Ocean Springs and Natchez, and a final restaurant, McDonnells. In 1858 McDonnell was joined by his son-in-law, Cora's husband Morris McGraw, who operated the Pass Christian Hotel. Morris and Cora had eight children. Following the Civil War in which McGraw served as a Private in the 5th Louisiana Infantry, he left the hotel business and established a woodenware business on Gravier Street until his death in 1903. His daughter Cora Law, named after his Mother, had the paintings preserved and exhibited at the Louisiana State Museum. Her niece Lucy McGraw Collins, who inherited the portraits, was a philanthropist; she established the New Orleans chapter of the American Women's Voluntary Services and served on the board of Charity Hospital. The McDonnell portraits and Clendinen portraits in lots 64-65 descended in the same family through the Collins/Thomas marriage when Lucy McGraw Collins' son Frederick Collins II (1921-1967) married Josephine Thomas Collins Watkins (1924-1992). Collins Watkins' maternal grandmother was a Catchings and the great-granddaughter of the Clendinens in lot 64-65. In 1975, she and her daughters are listed as the owners of these portraits by the Colonial Dames' Louisiana Portraits text.

Attributed to Chester Harding (American/Kentucky, 1792-1866), a pair of portraits of "Mr. Churchill Samuel" and "Mrs. Judith Talbot Samuel", oils on canvas, unsigned, biographical label en verso, 30 in. x 25 in., in matching period frames. Provenance: Descended in the family of the sitters, Tennessee. Note: Born into a political family, Judith Talbot Samuel was the daughter of Kentucky Senator Isham and Margaret Garrard Talbot. Portraits of her grandparents "Kentucky Governor James and Elizabeth Mountjoy Garrard" attributed to Chester Harding with the same provenance sold in these rooms on February 3, 2008. Initially self-taught, Chester Harding studied for two months at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and while living in Kentucky appears to have been influenced by the leading portraitist of the day, Matthew Jouett. From 1818 to 1823 Harding opened a portrait studio in Kentucky, where he earned national attention for his likeness of the frontier hero Daniel Boone. During this time, he evidently painted the engaging pendant portraits of "Mr. And Mrs. Churchill Samuel" and "Governor and Mrs. James Garrard."
