ATTRIBUTED TO CHESTER HARDING (1792-1866), AMERICANPOSSIBLE PORTRAIT OF SENATOR EDWARD BATES, CIRCA 1835Oil on canvas, sculpted oval29" x 23" — 73.7 x 58.4 cm.Provenance:Private Collection, TorontoNote:Senator Edward Bates (1793-1869) was an Attorney General in Lincoln’s Cabinet. Prior to that, he was based in St. Louis and was the Attorney General for the State of Missouri. Bates was prominent in State politics from 1822.Chester did portraits of many important US politicians in the period between 1826 and 1860. Chester Harding spent his winters in St. Louis from 1826 for many years. It makes sense that this portrait was painted in St. Louis and likely around 1835. The portrait appears to be of Edward Bates when he was around 40 years old.Estimate: $2,000—3,000
