Yann Renard Goulet RHA (1914-1999) VIEW OF THE CARLISLE BRIDGE AND DARGLE RIVER, BRAY oil on canvas signed lower left; with an Irish Times excerpt on Goulet by Aidan Dunne preserved on reverse h:21  w:25 in. Yann Renard Goulet was born in St Nazaire in Brittany in 1914, but became an Irish citizen when he moved here in 1947. Based in Bray, he quickly established himself on the artistic scene by winning a competition for the Custom House memorial in 1950. Known mainly for his sculptures, Goulet's expressive style distinguished him as an innovator in the Irish arts scene. He exhibited regularly at the RHA from 1960 to 1993 showing more than sixty works. For further reading see Theo Snoddy p.559

Yann Renard Goulet RHA (1914-1999) Des Vainqueurs Irlandaise Bronze on limestone base, 16 x 16cm (6.25 x 6.25") Signed with initials Yann Renard Goulet, originally from St. Nazaire in Brittany, moved to Bray, Co. Wicklow in 1947 to escape French authorities, following some trouble regarding his Breton separatist activities. He had studied on a scholarship at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts in the 1930s, and on arrival in Ireland he began making concrete blocks by day and teaching art classes at night. Recognition came in 1952 when he won the commission for the Custom House Memorial competition, and became an Irish citizen in the same year. In 1953 he exhibited at the International Hotel in Bray alongside Paul Henry and Mabel Young, and three years later his bust of David Kelly was exhibited at the Royal Academy in London. He received various commissions for memorials around the country during his career, was a founding member of Aosdána and was elected Professor of Sculpture at the RHA in 1986.

E4000-6000 The following two works are offered for auction on behalf of GORTA. The entire proceeds, including the buyer's commission will go to GORTA. Craig Bone ( Zimbabwean, B. 1955) Born in Harare, Zimbabwe, Bone studied graphic design at Natal University, South Africa. He returned to his homeland in 1977 and was severely injured while doing military service. He then took up painting full time. Inspired by the wealth of wildlife in his country he offers through his meticulous realistic representations a fascinating encounter with exotic animals. Craig Bone lives in a remote area of Northern Zimbabwe and travels throughout Central and South Africa seeking subjects for his paintings. His work is represented in numerous museums worldwide and he has illustrated many books on African wildlife. His paintings have fetched as much as $41000 (Christie's 1998) and prints of his works have sold in thousands, especially in the UK and the USA. It is particularly appropriate that these superb representations of Africa should be offered on behalf of GORTA, Ireland's oldest charity devoted to helping the developing world. Yann Renard Goulet RHA (1914-1999) REPUBLICAN MEMORIAL patinated plaster maquette for bronze 122cm., 48in. high Maquette for a memorial designed for the Republican plot at Miltown Cemetry, Belfast. This was the last major commission that Yann Goulet worked on and it was never realised due to illness. In design it relates closely to his bronze Guerilla Fighter, exhibited at the RHA in 1984 and illustrated in the catalogue to that show. Guerilla Fighter may in turn relate to a much earlier work of the same title, shown in Goulet's first one-man show in Ireland at Brown Thomas' Little Theatre in 1957.
