Bongaerts-Verbeeck Herenthals.The Belgian sculptor Charles-Auguste Fraikin (1817-1893) was born in Herentals in Belgium. After a difficult childhood and an early career training to be an apothecary. he re-devoted his life instead to the study and production of sculture under Pierre Puyenbroeck. Just 6 months after enrolling in the Académie royale des beaux-arts Brussels he won the internal competition for sculpture and more public success followed swiftly. In 1845 at the Salon de Bruxelles the Queen of the Belgians recommended his work L'Amour captif to King Leopold I and Royal commissions followed. The museum at Herentals devoted to his life and work was established by a bequest in his will- leaving the entirety of the plaster casts from his studio. In the gallery guide from 1891 the museum discusses this particular work: No 11 Amour au Berceau. It recounts how the work came into being after a public lottery in 1850- won by Dr Lombard from Liege. Versions of it were also executed in various materials including, notably, for M. le Baron de Rotschild a Paris. One of Fraikin's first public exhibitions of this composition was at the Great Exhibition of 1851 where his work was highlighted in Routledge's Guide in the description of the French and Italian Modern Sculpture Court. His work was noted as being graceful and delicate in the extreme and being especially worthy of attention from visitors:M. Fraikin of Brussels, a sculptor who possesses as great a reputation among his fellow artists in Belgium as with amateurs and the public in general... L'amour au Berceau or Cupid in his cradle Psyche and a Roman peasant woman are works also by M Fraikin which will appeal to the sympathies of visitors of all age. Exhibiting another version of this work at the 1855 l'Exposition Universelle in Paris he was rewarded with the patronage of Empress Eugenie, who had the group placed into her bedroom at the Tuileries Palace. Sadly, that example was lost in the Tuileries fire in 1871.

Charles Auguste Fraikin 1817 Herentals – 1893 Schaerbeek Bronze, gegossen, dunkelbraun patiniert. Am Fuß bezeichnet "F.ria Amodio Napoli". Hohler Sockel. Nach der originalen, 1839 entstandenen Marmorstatue des belgischen Künstlers Charles Auguste Fraikon. Die erste Version aus Gips wurde bei der Exposition Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Brüssel ausgestellt und gewann eine Goldmedaille. Es folgten mehrere Versionen aus Marmor, die ebenfalls auf großen Ausstellungen zu sehen waren. Das Motiv erfreute sich großer Beliebtheit und wurde vielfach von mehreren Künstlern wiederholt. Die Fonderia Amodio in Neapel schuf Nachbildungen, oft verkleinert, bekannter Skulpturen und Plastiken, die bei Reisenden auf der Grand Tour beliebt waren. Meist handelte es sich dabei um Werke der Antike, aber auch neuere Kunst war vertreten. Charles Auguste Fraikin 1817 Herentals – 1893 Schaerbeek Bereits als Zwölfjähriger erhielt er Zeichenunterricht an der Königlichen Akademie der Schönen Künste in Antwerpen. Ausbildung zum Apotheker, später erneute Hinwendung zur Kunst. 1839 erste Ausstellung, Erhalt der Goldmedaille für seine Skulptur "L''amour captif". 1845 Förderung durch das belgische Königshaus. Konservator der Abteilung Skulptur im Königlichen Museum der Schönen Künste, ab 1847 Mitglied der Académie royale des Sciences, des Lettres et des eaux-Arts de Belgique.

Charles Auguste Fraikin, Venus mit Taube an der Plinthe signiert "C.A. Fraikin. 1841", Gießerstempel "E. Quernel.", Bronze dunkel patiniert und fein nachziseliert, stehender Damenakt mit kunstvoll geknotetem Haar, sich liebevoll zum Kuss zu einer im Arm gehaltenen Taube beugend, auf runder Plinthe mit naturalistischer, fein gearbeiteter Oberfläche mit vegetabilen Elementen, auf ergänztem Sockel, Altersspuren, Patina teils stärker berieben, H Bronze ca. 29,5 cm, H gesamt ca. 33,7 cm. Künstlerinfo: belgischer Bildhauer (1817 Herenthals bis 1893 Schaerbeek-lez Bruxelles) besuchte mit 12 Jahren die Akademie in Antwerpen, musste jedoch aufgrund des Todes seines Vaters einen praktischen Beruf ergreifen und wurde Apothekergehilfe, er arbeitete später in der Apotheke des Schwagers von François-Joseph Navez (selbst Maler und Direktor der Brüsseler Akademie) und wurde von diesem bestärkt, sich wieder der Kunst zu widmen, dies zeigte sich als richtig, als Fraikin schon bei seiner ersten Ausstellung 1839 eine Goldmedaille für sein Werk "L’amour captif" gewann, stellte in Folge mehrere zierliche und graziöse Werke aus, die 1845 entworfene Marmorausführung von Amor und Venus wurde beispielsweise von den Brüsseler Staatsmuseen erworben, bereiste 1846/47 Italien und sammelte dort Inspiration für die durch die Antike inspirierten Kunstwerke und Denkmäler der kommenden Jahre, nahezu sein komplettes Werk ist als Reproduktion in Gips und Original in Marmor im Fraikin-Museum in Herenthals ausgestellt. Fu proprio l’Amour captif a favorire l’affermazione di Charles-Auguste Fraikin, uno degli scultori di maggior successo sul territorio belga a metà ottocento: presentato in gesso durante l'Exposition Nationale des Beaux-Arts di Bruxelles del 1845, vinse in questa occasione la medaglia d’oro e successivamente fu esposto a Londra (Crystal Palace, Great Exhibition, 1851) e a Dublino (International Exhibition, 1853). Una sua versione in marmo venne poi ordinata dal museo dell’Hermitage di San Pietroburgo e dal Musée Royale des Beaux-Arts di Bruxelles mentre il modello in gesso è oggi conservato nel Musée Fraikin a Herentals insieme a molte altre sue invenzioni particolarmente apprezzate dal pubblico per il suo mix di frivolezza rococò e grazia ispirata all’antichità classica. Maggiormente prossimo a un esemplare antico è la versione in bronzo di ottima fattura qui presentata che sostituisce il decorato supporto che finge elementi naturali degli esemplari noti con una elegante base in marmo.
