Adam fils / Dunkerque 1893' (lower right) Oil on canvas 24 x 36in. (61 x 91.5cm.) Built by R. Steele & Co of Greenock for the Allan Line, Ravenscrag (named after the eponymous Scottish castle) registered 1,253 tons, was 219ft long with a breadth of 35ft. She plied a steady and successful trade to the United States and is even credited with introducing the ukulele to Hawaii when she carried 400 Portuguese immigrant labourers from Madeira in 1879. The Allan Line sold her in 1885 to J.C. Richardson of Swansea who ran her for eleven years and so it is their House flag depicted in this fine painting. Bought by F.G. Mabane of South Shields in 1896, they sold her again in 1901 to the Norwegian company J. Johanson & Co of Oslo who renamed her Armenia and re-rigged her as a barque. She was wrecked in 1907 attempting to put into Port Matane (Quebec) in thick fog. Fine overall condition but would benefit from a cleaning.

Large oil on canvas nautical scene shows broadside view of the black hulled ship with sails up, sailing right to left, flying American flag, ships pennant, and having several men on deck. Another view of the ship coming toward viewer is seen off the bow. All under a multi-colored cloud sky. Signed lower right "Ed. Adam / Harve 1874". The ship was built at North Sixth St, Williamsburg; Thomas Stack was the builder and it was launched October 11th, 1856. Owners were William Laytin and Edwin Hurlbut. The ship was more of a carrier of immigrants than freight servicing. The ship was purchased by John Arbuckle in 1899; he was the son of a Scot/Irish immigrant. He made his money in the coffee business. The ship was made into a floating hotel which made Saturday to Monday trips with activities and accommodations for the guests. Housed in a modern gilt frame. SIZE: 24" h x 36" w. Overall 30" h x 41-1/2" w. CONDITION: Lined, above the blue flag there is a slit in the old canvas which does not penetrate the lining, craquelure, otherwise very good. 52902-11

Other Notes: The Frederick Billings was a four masted wooden ship built in 1885 by Carleton, Norwood & Co., Rockport, Maine. The first master of the ship was Captain Isaac W Sherman from Camden, Maine and the ship was intended for the San Francisco trade. It burned "to the waterline" in the Caleta Buena harbor in 1893. Lot 264 in this sale, a shadowbox ship diaorama, depicts the Frederick Billings as well.

With Kaleda's name pennant on her mainmast, and on the mizzen, beneath the British ensign, is the four-flag hoist J.R.M.P., her commercial code designation. Little information is available on the vessel, but she looks to be around 500 tons with a length of about 120 feet. Barkentines such as Kaleda were most prominent in the late 19th century.

The steamship depicts multiple people on the deck along with a deckhouse and life boats. A Danish flag is depicted on the smoke stack. There is a pilot boat and it is numbered 7. Patch reads "Valther Moller Ramsherred 47a Assens". Signature: Unsigned. Date of Work: Circa1890. Frame: Original frame. Artist Biography: Edouard Adam (real name Marie-Edouard Adam) born 2 April 1847 in Brie-Comte-Robert , died 10 February 1929 in Havre , is a painter of French marine scenes. He was a student of Durand-Brager (1814-1879) and learned the trade of marine painting in Paris. After marrying Katty Caroline Watters, and having a son, Charles Edward Victor in 1868, he moved to Le Havre in 1873 to draw portraits of ships, such as the Roux family. He experienced the development of maritime traffic, as many merchant ships would stop there, and many owners had their offices stationed there. He quickly gained a reputation among owners of Cape Horners and captains and harbor pilots who became clients. October 8th, 1881, Edward Adam was commissioned by Admiral Francois-Edmond Paris, then curator of the Museum of the Marine Louvre, to continue the collection of portraits of boats started by Frederic Roux for the Naval Museum of the Louvre. He represented the battles or scenes campaign, in addition to its traditional portraits. December 17th, 1885, he joined the Corps Painters Navy. All ship owners wanted to have a representation of it by Edouard Adam. The phasing of the sailing in favor of steam engines had no effect on its business, Edward Adam continued to draw and paint faithful representations of ships transiting Havre. The commercial success of his business led him to communicate his passion to his son, Charles Edward Victor (1868-1938). Meta: Painting, Art, Nautical, Maritime, Marine.

PORTRAIT OF THE SHIP HINDOSTAN, SCHOOL OF EDOUARD ADAM SR. (FRENCH, 1847-1929). Watercolor on paper, unsigned. Large portrait with wonderful detail. In a frame, 32"h. 43.25"w. Research has located several British ships named Hindostan (variously Hindustan), and one appears similar in size and rigging was an East Indiaman purchased by the Royal Navy in 1795 and was lost to fire in 1804. However, the date of this watercolor would suggest a later ship by that name. See also lot 249 for another ship portait by the same hand.
