      unusually large autochrome by Edis, a society photographer specialising in colour, titled 'Sir Charles Tomes in white on the black edge tape, the rest of the inscription not legible (quite dark and with some silvering at edges, otherwise good condition), with two further full-plate autochromes by Edis requiring restoration, one of an oil painting (one edge tape missing, the other sandwiched between the glass plates), one of a painted stained glass window, (two edge tapes missing, loss of image at edges), all three 21.5cm x 16.3cm (3)

      § Mary Olive Edis (British, 1876-1955) Portrait head of a man signed and dated to the reverse plaster (Mary) Olive Edis, later Edis-Galsworthy was a British photographer who was famous for autochrome photographs and portrait photography. She served as a war artist in World War I. In 1903 she and her sister Katherine opened a studio in Sheringham, Norfolk where they specialised in portraits of local fishermen and members of the local gentry. She later had studios in Farnham, Surrey and Ladbroke Grove, London. Edis worked with platinum prints and from 1912 she pioneered colour autochrome photography. Her sitters included George Bernard Shaw, Emmeline Pankhurst and the Duke of York. In 1914, Edis was elected a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society. She was appointed an official war artist and photographed British Women's Services and the battlefields of France and Flanders 1918-19 for the Imperial War Museum. She married a Cambridge academic Edwin Henry Galsworthy, a cousin of the novelist John Galsworthy. She died in 1955.

Photographed by (Mary) Olive Edis (later Edis-Galsworthy) with embossed stamp lower right and as marked verso. Edis (1876-1955) was a British photographer who was famous for autochrome photographs and portrait photography. She served as a war artist in World War I. MEASUREMENTS: Image 7-3/4" x 6". Overall 13" x 9-7/8". CONDITION: Minor areas of toning and soiling but overall image and signature are crisp and clear.
