Measuring 4.25" x 6.25", n.p., n.d. An attractive portrait of Dvorak dressed in a dark, three-piece suit with a bow-tied neckcloth. Signed at the lower margin "Antonin Dvorak", with an additional dedication (illegible) along the top edge. The photograph was produced by Y. Mulac at Praha, Prague. PSA Slabbed and Graded, measuring 6.5" x 10" overall. Edge and corner wear to the photo card edges. Smudging to Dvorak's dark signature. Antonín Leopold Dvorák (1841-1904) was a Czech composer praised for his use of folk elements from his homeland in his music to craft a musical nationalism. He is best known for his work "New World Symphony", or "Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, Op. 95".           Anton Dvorak, 1817 - 1881, NACH DER PLÜNDERUNG Öl auf Leinwand. 122 x 158 cm. Rechts unten signiert und datiert "1848". Das großformatige, mehrfigurige Bild zeigt eine Szene der Verteilung der Beute nach einer Plünderung durch einen Hauptmann im Harnisch, der seine Räubergesellen auszahlt, die sich beim Biergelage erfreuen. Detailreiche Wiedergabe der Szenerie, Darstellung der Söldner oder Freischärler beim Abzählen des Geldes bzw. bei der lustvollen Betrachtung der Goldbeutel. Links im Hintergrund ein Marketenderzelt mit jungen Dirnen an einem Weinfass, von den Landknechten geneckt. Im rechten Hintergrund ein junges Paar, das Mädchen schmiegt sich angstvoll an den Jüngling, der entsetzt auf die Szene zurückblickt. Die Schilderung der Szene meisterhaft, der Malstil naturalistisch in betont ruhiger Farbgebung. ..(880092)

          Autograph letter signed ("Antonin Dvorák"), all but the opening in English, to an unnamed correspondent, informing him that all the compositions he asks for are still in manuscript and he does not intend at present to have them published, while the mass, op.86, after which he inquires is the property of Littleton [of Novello's]; adding that he will consider the matter when he goes to America, one page, mounted on an album leaf, some smudging and small burn-mark at edges, 8vo, Prague, 21 October 1891

          921. ANTON DVORAK (1841 - 1904) Czech composer whose influences include Brahms, Wagner and folk music from his native land. Dvorak composed nine symphonies, two piano duets called Slavonic Dances, operas chamber music, cantatas, and masses. From 1892-1895 Dvorak served as Director of the National Conservatory in New York where he composed his most famous work, his Symphony No.9 "From the New World". Nice content A.L.S. "Anton Dvorak" in English, 1p. 8vo., Vysoka, July 21, 1892, to Alfred Littleton of the Novello publishing house, in part: "...Some days ago I sent you the full score of the Mass (M.S.), as you asked me to write for you. I maked [sic] it for a large orchestra (except FL or Ob.) and I hope for it is done to your satisfaction. Please let me know if you got my M.S. and all will be right...". Dvorak composed his Mass in D-Major in 1887. Originally a choral work with organ accompaniment, he revised it at Novello's request for orchestra. This revised version, to which Dvorak refers here, was then published in 1893. Richly framed in dark green with garnet red accents with a forceful 4 1/2" x 6 1/2" portrait pf Dvorak, and set into wood and gilt frame. Boldly written and very good, not examined out of frame.  $3,000 - 4,000
