          R. SCHUMANN AUTOGRAPH LETTER TO LOUIS SPOHR, 23 NOVEMBER 1842

          Est: £8,000 - £10,000

expressing his regret at not having been able to see him during his visit last summer, noting his wife had intended to play him her first trio, informing him that before he had heard of his wish to see his symphony he had wanted to send it to him to obtain his opinion on it, DISCUSSING THE GENESIS OF THE SYMPHONY, explaining that it was written towards the end of winter 1841 when he was in the throes of a longing for spring, observing that it was not his intention to depict such feelings, but admitting that the time of year no doubt will have influenced the work's composition, stating that he will not find the work easy, but not too difficult either; in a remarkable, extended passage, Schumann points out and discusses hard passages in the symphony, furnishes his discussion with two musical examples, notes that the slow movement poses no difficulties, and discusses in detail the problems posed by the scherzo, especially by its coda, which he describes as the most difficult in the symphony, and asks for his understanding if it doesn't come off straight away; in the closing part of the letter, Schumann observes that when he compares his [Spohr's] last symphony, which he read yesterday with true exaltation, with others, he realizes just how much is still to be done ...Ich schrieb die Symphonie zu Ende Winters 1841, wenn ich es sagen darf, in jenem Frühlingsdrang, der den Menschen wohl bis in das höchste Alter hinauf und in jedem Jahre von Neuem überfällt.

Provenance: CHARLES JOHN PALMER (ink ownership inscription to flyleaves of both vols dated 'Gt. Yarmouth 29th September 1839, and engraved armorial bookplates) -- circular engraved armorial bookplate. AUTHOR'S OWN UNIQUE EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED PROOF COPY OF HIS MAJOR WORK ON THE HISTORY AND ARCHITECTURE OF HIS FAMILY'S ELIZABETHAN HOUSE. Palmer came from an established Great Yarmouth family. His father, John Danby Palmer (1769-1841), served as the town's mayor twice, and he followed this tradition by being elected to the same office in 1854. A keen promoter of Great Yarmouth, Palmer was deeply interested in the town's history, and he was a keen antiquarian, becoming fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1830. His father bought the Tudor house at 4 South Quay in 1809 (now called 'Elizabethan House'), and the present work is Palmer's private record of the building. It was issued in at least two forms, with a focus on the Elizabethan ornamentation, fittings and furniture, but in this magnificent author's own 'grangerized' copy, Palmer considerably expands the nature of the work, placing the house's historical narrative in a wider context. RIBA 2416 (ordinary issue with variant title). (2)

GRATIOT, CHARLES Autograph Letter Signed, 1838, with franked address panel.

          Est: $300 - $400

GRATIOT, CHARLES American soldier and public official (1786-1855); served as Gen. W.H. Harrison's chief engineer during the War of 1812; built Ft. Meigs and rebuilt Ft. St. Joseph; later, Chief of Engineers for the US Army and a clerk at the General Land Office. Autograph Letter Signed "C. Gratiot" as Chief of Engineers, 1/2 page, 4to, Washington, February 21, 1838. He writes Dr. M.C. Buck of the same city, "I have delayed a reply to your letter...in hopes of receiving Genl. [Winfield] Scott's application Endorsed on the back of Prof: Haddeman's certificate. It has not, as yet, reached the Dept. & should it come in before Mr. Robinson makes a nommination [sic], your wishes respecting it will be complied with..." Some discolorations at right edge, otherwise in very good condition. With integral panel bearing an Autograph Frank "Free / C. Gratiot," addressed in the general's hand. It is unclear what nomination is alluded to here, though Mr. Robinson is probably Senator John M. Robinson of Maine, chairman of the committee on the militia. Just two months after this letter, President Van Buren sent General Scott to Georgia, where he broke up the Cherokee nation, forcing thousands to move west. The president later removed General Gratiot from his post when the engineer was unable to repay government funds that had been in his charge.
