After Andrea Del Sarto, late 19th century-

    Est: £200 - £300

After Andrea Del Sarto, late 19th century- Portrait of a Sculpture, traditionally held to be a self portrait of the artist; oil on canvas, 74x59cm: Note: Andrea Del Sarto, his reputation now somewhat obscured by that of Raphael. An incident in the life of Andrea del Sarto relating to a copy after Raphael and illustrates the similarity between the two contemporary artists, a portrait of Pope Leo X by executed c.1523 by Raphael. The painting commissioned as a gift for Federico II Gonzaga Duke of Mantua from the Ottaviano de Medici. When completed the Ottaviano de Medici unwilling to part with the painting had Del Sarto make a copy and sending it to the Duke as the original by Raphael. Gorgio Vasari went to see the painting apparently aware of the deceit, presumably told to him by del Sarto. The Duke was only convinced that it was not the hand of Raphael when Vasari revealed a secret mark only known to the original artist, a common practice for artists and craftsman for centuries. (LP)

    Est: $40,000 - $60,000

The Holy Family with the Infant Saint John the Baptist oil on panel 591/2 x 45 in. (151 x 114.3 cm.) NOTES The present lot is based on del Sarto's Holy Family in the Galleria Nazionale, Rome. Sydney Freedberg ( Andrea del Sarto, Cambridge, MA, 1962, II, pp. 179-180) lists a number of variants, some of which include the figure of Saint John the Baptist, such as that formerly in the Gaddi-Poggi collection, Florence, in which the saint is similar to that in del Sarto's Pinti Madonna. In the present work, however, the Saint John is copied in reverse from Raphael's Madonna dell'Impannata, Palazzo Pitti, Florence. Freedberg ( loc. cit. ) records another version of the composition that also adapts this figure, but lacks the Saint Joseph.

ANDREA PICINELLI, IL BRESCIANINO (c.1486-Florence d. after 1525)

    Est: $40,000 - $60,000

Christ holding the Cross, as the Man of Sorrows oil on canvas 427/8 x 281/2 in. (108.9 x 72.4 cm.) PROVENANCE Anon. Sale, Sotheby's, New York, 30 January 1997, lot 81, as Giampietrino ($51,750). NOTES Brescianino is first documented in Siena in 1507 and, apart from a short visit to Rome in 1516 to assist Baldassare Peruzzi with the decoration of the Villa Farnesina, he spent most of his time there. The present work can be dated to circa 1510-1515. By then he had absorbed the local styles of his first master, Girolamo del Pacchia, and the color and mannerism of Domenico Beccafumi, and had begun to combine with these the influences of Raphael, Fra Bartolommeo and Leonardo da Vinci, whose work he knew through frequent visits to Florence. The compositional and more sculptural style of Andrea del Sarto, which Brescianino adopted towards the end of his life, did not become dominant until circa 1516. Comparison can be made between the present painting and the Madonna and Child with Saints John the Baptist and Jerome of circa 1510 in the Museo d'arte sacra della Val d'arbia (see M. Maccherini, in the catalogue of the exhibition, Domenico Beccafumi e il suo Tempo, Siena, 16 June - 4 November 1990, p. 296, no. 58). Both works display a slight rigidity to the figures and a liking for a centralized composition, evidence of the enduring mark made on Brescianino by Leonardo whose work he first came into contact with in Florence circa 1507. We are grateful to Everett Fahy for suggesting and confirming the attribution on first-hand inspection.
