Die Beziehung zwischen Herkules und Omphale war ungewöhnlich, da sie Omphale, the daughter of the river god Iardanos, was a powerful and independent ruler. She not only possessed royal authority, but also great wisdom and strength. The relationship between Hercules and Omphale was unusual as it represented a reversal of traditional gender roles. But at the same time, he also showed himself in more domestic and humble activities that were traditionally considered feminine. These stories illustrate not only the versatility of Hercules, but also the power and influence of Omphale. November 1754 in seiner Heimatstadt Amsterdam. Flora with three cupids , signed 'JdWit invt et fecit' (lower right), red chalk on paper, tondo, ⌀ 33 cm, Provenance:-With Kunsthandel Schlichte Bergen, Amsterdam, 20 March 1992, where acquired by the family of the present owner , Eighteenth-century Dutch painting pales beside the creative outburst of the 17th century, in both power and quality. Artists evidently did not know how to build on the achievements of that Golden Age. One of the main reasons for this decline is that there was no proper training for an artist in the Netherlands. One of the few who managed to avoid this pitfall was Jacob de Wit, an Amsterdammer born and bred who had a good sense to complete his study of drawing and painting in Antwerp, where he attended the academy and enrolled in the local Guild of St Luke. He practised by copying from the numerous works of Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck. The art of these two masters provided the basis for De Wit's baroque art, which he brought to Amsterdam in 1716. He had an extremely successful carreer, and his pictures in grey and white in particular became so popular that they were known as ‘witje’ in a play on his name ('wit' being Dutch for white). In his death inventory dozens of his stock of sketches were mentioned. It has been discovered that if he actually used a model for a ceiling he would note this down on the back of the drawing. In this way he kept a record of the work he did for his clients, who were mainly nobles and patricians. It appears that most of the designs were exercises that were never executed. The reason for this is that De Wit never ceased practising his art. Drawing was in his blood. The lot in auction has no inscription, apart from the signature. It should very probably be classed as one such exercise that has not been commissioned. The iconography is ambiguous. When he made the drawing he had not finally settled on the subject, possibly because he wanted to leave the choice to the client. On the one hand there are the traditional elements of a Caritas: a woman with three putti representing Faith, Hope and Charity. On the other hand, the flowers and foliage point to a depiction of Flora, the goddess of Spring, who was a popular motif in ceiling paintings. Source: Drs John Schlichte Bergen, catalogue ‘Master paintings and drawings’, 1992.

Douwes Fine Art, Amsterdam - Private collection, The Netherlands N.B.: Jacob de Wit, born in the Jordaan neighbourhood of Amsterdam, and Cornelis Troost (1696-1750) were among the most deserving painters of the eighteenth century. His clients were exclusively from the upper classes. In a baroque style, similar to that of Peter Paul Rubens, De Wit became a success by making many Rococo ceiling-, door- and chimney paintings. These were painted predominantly for houses on the Amsterdam canals. In addition to his monumental works the pen drawings and studies by De Wit were also very well executed. He was also renowned for his extremely realistic oil paintings of sculpture, also called grisailles, that were soon nicknamed 'Witjes' in honour of the painter.
