Jacob de Wit fut dès l'âge de neuf ans élève d'Albert van Spiers (1666-1718), disciple de Gérard de Lairesse (1641-1711), qui après un séjour à Rome revint à Amsterdam pour y mener une florissante carrière de peintre de plafonds, portes, cheminées, genre dans lequel Jacob de Wit excellera à son tour. Son oncle, Jacomo de Wit, marchand d'art et membre de la Gilde de Saint-Luc à Anvers, le prend sous son aile et lui présente les plus grands artistes de l'époque ainsi que de nombreux mécènes. Ce séjour lui permit d'assimiler le style rubénien qu'il retranscrit en 1711 avec justesse dans sa série de trente-six dessins reproduisant les peintures de Rubens du plafond de l'église des Jésuites (détruites quelques années après par la foudre). En 1715, il s'établit définitivement à Amsterdam où son succès rapide, se partagea entre une peinture d'autel d'inspiration anversoise destinée aux églises catholiques et la peinture de plafond et de trumeau destinée à une riche clientèle de particuliers dans un style décoratif plus empreint d'art italien. Ses aeuvres sont toujours marquées par une clarté élégante et une fluidité dans les jeux de lumière. Dans notre exemple, la composition affronte deux groupes de divinités sur des nuées, à gauche, Bacchus, couronné de pampres, tient son bâton sommé d'un fruit et reçoit des mains d'une jeune femme une coupe à vin ; à droite des divinités florales féminines se déploient avec allégresse. Légèreté des formes et volume aérien des nuages témoignent du grand art de l'artiste. Un dessin à la plume consacré à Flore, passé sur le marché de la vente publique parisienne en 2006, reprend un schéma identique et la figure de Flore n'est pas sans rappeler celle de la jeune femme de notre composition . Tout autant que ses peintures, ce sont ses innombrables dessins préparatoires et dessins indépendants, comme c'est le cas en l'espèce, qui assurèrent la durable célébrité de l'artiste dont la présence est notoire dans presque tous les bons cabinets de dessins, particulièrement à Bruxelles, dans le fonds Degrez, et à Amsterdam.

The sale will be conducted in Euros (e).
Purchasers pay in addition to the hammer price, a buyer's premium from 0 to e 500 000:
25,20% (21 % + VAT).
For amounts superior to e 500 000: 19% (15,83% + VAT).
Lots from outside the EEC: (indentified by an*). In addition to the commissions and taxes indicated above, an additional import VAT will be charged (7% of the hammer price, 20% for jewelry).
For any member of the EEC, non assembled stones are liable to VAT 20%.
The auctioneer is bound by the indications in the catalogue, modified only by eventual announcements made at the time of the sale noted into the legal records thereof. Prospective bidders should inspect the property before bidding to determine its condition, size, and wether or not it has been repaired, restored or repainted. Exhibitions prior to the sale at Marc-Arthur Kohn or on the sale point permits buyers to establish the condition of the works offered for sale, and therefore no claims will be accepted after the fall of the hammer. Pictures may differ from actual product.

BIDS
Biddings will be in accordance with the lot numbers listed in the catalogue or as announced by the auctioneer, and will be in increments determined by the auctioneer. The highest and last bidder will be the purchaser. Should the auctioneer recognize two simultaneous bids on
an object, the lot will be put up for sale again and all those present in the sale room may participate in this second opportunity to bid.

ABSENTEE BIDS AND TELEPHONE BIDS
If you wish to make a bid in writing or a telephone bid, we have to receive no later than two days before the sale your instructions accompanied by your bank references. In the event of identical bids, the earliest will take precedence. Telephone bids are a free service designed for
