        Est: £1,800 - £2,500

[Huys (Franz, 1517-1562)] [Pourtraicture ingenieuse de plusieurs facons de Masques], 14 plates only (from a set of 18), engravings, after Cornelis Floris (1508-1575), lacking engraver's initials, first published by Hans Leifrinck, [Antwerp, circa 1555], bound with Hans Vredeman de Vries (1527-?1606), Multarum variarumque protractionum ..., frontispiece and 12 engravings of ornamental cartouches, and Variarum protractionum ..., frontispiece and 14 engravings of ornamental cartouches, both published by Gerard de Jode, Antwerp, 1555, bound with Jacob Floris the Elder (1524-1581), Compertimenta pictoriis Flosculis Manubissq ..., frontispiece and 15 engraved ornamental designs, engraved by Pieter van der Heyden (1525-1569) after Floris, published by Hieronymous Cock, Antwerp, 1567, each leaf c. 255 x 190 mm., various 16th century watermarks, mostly uniform to each suite, contemporary numbering in brown ink, occasional surface dirt and browning, finger-soiling, curled corners and handling creases, bound in contemporary limp vellum from an early 16th century notarial document, 4to, worn, [circa 1555-1567] ⁂ An impressive collection of 57 plates of ornamental design including a group of mascheroni, or 'grotesques'. The group of 14 engravings after Cornelis Floris are composed of forms of sea creatures, shells, fruit and leaves, and are assembled in the 'grotesque' style derived from ancient Roman prototypes; the remarkable designs are also reminiscent of the composite heads produced slightly later by Guiseppe Archimboldo (1526-1593).

Circle of Abel Grimmer (Antwerp c. 1570-1618/9)

        Est: $39,000 - $54,600

The Tower of Babel signed (?) with monogram 'HV' (lower centre, on the fountain) oil on panel 371/2 x 50 in. (95.2 x 127 cm.) PROVENANCE In the collection of the family of the present owner since at least the nineteenth century. NOTES Reine de Bertier de Sauvigny, to whom we are very grateful for her assistance in cataloguing this lot, has proposed a full attribution to Hans Vredeman de Vries (Leeuwarden 1527-?1606 Antwerp?) for this picture. The composition belongs to a number of works by late-sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Flemish artists that are mostly influenced ultimately by the two iconic eponymous works of Pieter Breugel I of 1563 (Vienna, Kunsthistorisches Museum; and Rotterdam, Museum Boijmans-Van Beuningen), whose architectural representation was influenced by the Colosseum in Rome. The present picture clearly recalls the work of Abel Grimmer, for example the painting formerly in the von Bissing collection, Munich, dated 1591 (see R. de Bertier de Sauvigny, Jacob et Abel Grimmer, Brussels, 1991, p. 189, no. 1), or those sold, Christie's, Amsterdam, 17 October 1977, lot 317, or, Sotheby's, London, 11 April 1990, lot 12, both signed and dated 1604. All three include the raised terrace (on the right, as opposed to that in the present picture on the left) with the figures of Nimrod, his courtiers, architects and soldiers. The present painting, however, not only presents a greater level of detail in both the architecture and the staffage than is represented in Grimmer's versions, but in addition appears to possess a stronger grasp both of perspective and architecture. Those areas would accord perfectly with the abilities of Vredeman de Vries, who specialised in a Mannerist style of architecture that is unusually evident in the present Tower, but about whose painting style relatively little is known. Interestingly, Van Mander mentioned that 'Vredeman de Vries, when he travelled from Hamburg to Amsterdam, took with him a Tower of Babel full of details which had given him a lot of trouble with his eyes. That picture is now in the possession of a certain Pieter Overlander in Amsterdam.'.

        HANS VREDEMAN DE VRIES (1527-?1606)

        Est: $2,640 - $3,520

Perspective. French text. Leyden: Beuckel Nieulandt for Hendrik Hondius, 1604-1605. 2 parts in one volume, oblong 2o (249 x 333mm). Engraved title to part II with letterpress text. 72 engraved plates by Hondius and Bartholomeus Dolendo [cf. Nagler I, 1757] after Vredeman de Vries, 2 engraved illustrations by Hondius, woodcut initials. (Variable light browning, occasional marking or light staining, a few paper-flaws affecting the text, part I lacking title and ƒ1-2 torn and neatly repaired, some neat marginal repairs in part II.) Contemporary vellum (some marking, rebacked, board edges repaired, lacking ties). FIRST EDITION, French-language issue. Vredeman de Vries studied painting with Reijer Griesten and then assisted Pieter Coecke van Aelst with the decoration of the triumphal arches built for the entry of the future Emperor Philip II into Antwerp in 1549. This work with Serlio's first Dutch translator not only brought Vredeman de Vries into contact with a circle of artists and architects, but also introduced him to the classical masters. As a consequence of the religious upheavals of the period, Vredeman worked in Hamburg, Gdansk and Prague, before returning to Holland at the end of the sixteenth century, by which time he was perhaps best known for his numerous engravings, in which capacity he was far more prolific than as an artist or architect. Through his various publications, Vredeman de Vries is recognised as the 'foremost among sixteenth century Netherlandish [architectural] authors [...] an engraver, architect, and painter of prodigious imagination and talent' (Millard, p.19). Perspective was issued simultaneously in French, Latin, Dutch and German in 1604-1605, and is counted 'among Vredeman's more celebrated works [...] What makes this book so visually compelling is Vredeman's geometric emphasis and restraint, which results in an almost eerie sequence of unpopulated rooms and courtyards, [...] displaying his flair for compositional forms. The classical language in which his architecture is clad thus becomes timeless in its character' (Millard, pp.20-21). Cicognara 867; Millard Northern European Books 139 (lacking engraved title to pt ii). For 1604-1605 Latin issue: Berlin Katalog 4704; Fowler 432. PROVENANCE Dr Anton C.R. Dreesmann (inventory no. Y-5).
