Maternal grandfather of Colonel Francis Moore. This portrait was painted in 1796 at the age of 18', pastel 62 x 52cm Provenance: By descent within the family of the sitter. William Wilkieson took holy orders and bought the Woodbury estate in Bedfordshire, where he immediately had the house rebuilt. Woodbury Hall was completed in 1806 with limestone brought up from Portland in Dorset. The Doric columns and the semi-circular porch give it a grand Georgian appearance.

      HENRI-PIERRE DANLOUX (1753-1809)

      Est: £3,000 - £5,000

HENRI-PIERRE DANLOUX (1753-1809) PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN signed & dated l.l. HP Danloux 1800 oil on canvas 73.0 x 59.3cm / 28 3/4 x 23 1/4in There are several possible candidates for the present work's sitter: Danloux exhibited a portrait of a Mr Rodgers in 1800 at the Royal Academy Summer Show (No. 203), who is recorded in the artist's journal as "M. Prodgers"; the artist is also known to have been commissioned to paint a bust portrait such as this of the Hon. Sir Henry Lambert, 4th Baronet, which could have been completed between 1795 and 1800 (1) during the numerous sittings for Lambert's wife and son in either of these years (2). Henri Pierre Danloux lived in England between 1792-1802. His style of portraiture changed considerably in these years as is evidenced particularly by this painting of 1800. Soon after immigrating he found it necessary to adapt himself to the less ornate, lighter tastes of the English demimonde and aristocracy who comprised his customers: "He did, too, abandon the kind of detail that characterised his 1791 portrait of the Baron de Besenval [National Gallery, London)...reflecting the greater simplicity of English taste and style" (3) During his time in Britain his clients included the Duke of Buccleuch and his family, a number of Scottish aristocrats, as well as members of the exiled French community including the Comte d'Artois and the Duc d'Angoulême. Portalis - Henri-Pierre Danloux, peintre de portraits et son journal durant l'émigration, Paris 1753-1809 - Paris, 1910 - pp.246-247 (2) The portrait of Lambert's wife sold Old Master and 19th Century Drawings & Paintings, Sotheby's, Paris, 19.06.2006, Lot 79. • Henri-Pierre Danloux (1753-1809) - Portrait of a gentleman, possibly Guillaume Jean Mosqueron (1758-c.1790s)

Henri-Pierre Danloux (1753-1809) - Portrait of a gentleman, possibly Guillaume Jean Mosqueron (1758-c.1790s)

      Est: £8,000 - £12,000

Oil on canvas 54 x 39 cm. (21 ¼ x 15 ¼ in) In a British gilt frame of c.1800 Painted circa 1796, British Emigre Period Provenance: Guin Mosqueron, [?the ...]/ of E[...] Pie[...] (inscribed on old, incomplete label attached to reverse) This portrait is a superb example of Danloux s highly-finished cabinet portraiture, such as The Baron de Besenval in his Cabinet de Compagnie 1791 (National Gallery, London). Compositionally it echoes Louis Henri de Bourbon, Prince de Condé (Chateau de Chantilly). Despite the elegant costume, Danloux conveys a plain and unpretentious character. A pentiment shows where the artist moved the sitter s hat to his hand, creating a sense of fidgety anticipation. The Mosquerons were a Cherbourg family of ships captains. From the English inscription and the landscape background, resembling the coast around the Port of Leith, this portrait may have been painted in Edinburgh, where Danloux went in 1796 to paint the Comte d Artois, the future King Charles X, and members of the exiled French Court at Holyroodhouse.
