Notes

This unlined and beautifully preserved portrait of Henry Scott, 3rd Duke of Buccleuch is a variant of the picture, of identical dimensions, in a Scottish private collection. That picture is considered to be one of a set of five small oil portraits that were almost certainly preparatory sketches for Danloux's celebrated portrait of the 3rd Duke's family (1796; Duke of Buccleuch collection), the work considered to be the artist's masterpiece from his years in England.
