Louis Galice, Paris One of the most celebrated talents of Victorian Paris, Arlette Dorgère was not only the house chanteuse of La Scala, but also the known companion of a variety of royals and tycoons. A trendsetter, style icon, and household name, she certainly brought a lot of box office success to any show in which she performed. Appearing here in a swirl of scarves and skintight attire, she seems nude (save for her apparent lack of nipples), certainly more than living up to the title "the princess of the flirts."

In the early years of the 20th century Damare found regular work for the Parisian music halls, designing at least four posters for Parisiana. The "romantic" notion of the sexy showgirl and the lurid aristocrat was routinely used to advertise the revues held at these venues. Damare's poster fits neatly into this genre, and while a cliché, it is certainly an appealing one. He also pays a visual tribute to an earlier icon in that his cats, crawling among Parisian rooftop chimneys, are a nod to Manet's 1868 posters for Champfleury's Les Chats.

Farblithographie. 128 x 88 cm. (Paris), Charaire & A. Sceaux, (1905). Großformatiges Jugendstilplakat von L. Damaré (gestorben 1927, unten rechts in der Platte datiert und signiert: "L. Damaré 05") für die Uraufführung der beliebten Operette Paris s'amuse in der Parisiana, dem großen Pariser Theater- und später auch Kinopalast der Jahrhundertwende. Die Musik stammt von dem fruchtbaren Operetten-Kompositeur Justin Clérice (1863-1908). Ein elegant gekleidetes Pärchen, er in schwarzem Abendanzug mit Zylinder und Schnauzer, sie in roséfarbenem Atlas mit Blumen im Haar blicken über den Pariser Dächern, auf denen die schwarzen Katzen streunen, den goldenen Mond an, der grinsend sein fahles Licht streut. Ganz nebenbei löst der Bonvivant das breite Band vom Dekolleté seiner schönen Partnerin, das diese nur mühsam noch über ihrer Brust festhalten kann. Oberer Rand etwas knapp beschnitten, nur wenige Randläsuren, mehrfach geknickt, kaum berieben, nur minimal gebräunt, sehr farbfrisch und insgesamt wohlerhalten. Mit dem kleinen sechseckigen Zensurstempel der République Française.

Do you think it's mere coincidence that this aviation loving damsel's frock matches the golden hue of her favorite tipple? Or that she drinks Aviatina simply because it's "Digestive" and "Fortifying?" OR that she knew exactly how to galvanize the attention of the pilot who appears prepared to make an emergency balcony landing in his Antoinette in order to get his hands on the woman, her cordial glass or both? No, we don't think so either. However, Damare knows how to create a memorable scene, one filled with sly humor and exaggeration that still manages to place the product being promoted in the fore. No biographical data for the artist is available, yet he (or she) worked for the Folies-Bergere, the Olympia and other top music halls for years, always coming up with humorous, attention-getting designs of this sort. 1911 14 3/8 x 22 in./36.5 x 55.8 cm

Francis Dufor.According to a 1905 press release, Dufor was a "chanteur realiste dans ses oeuvres." Assuming that this meant that he was a troubadour storyteller who spun tales about the people that he encountered, it's interesting to note that while Damare portrays him on the one hand as a sophisticated strummer, the smoke coming off of his discarded cigarette creates a rather proletariate profile of the entertainer, giving the impression that Dufor was capable of musically conjuring folks from all walks of life. No biographical data for Damare is available, yet he (or she) worked for the Folies-Bergere, the Olympia and other top music halls for years, always coming up with humorous, attention-getting designs of this sort.
