Isaac James Cullin - Bayardo in the Paddock at Epsom

        Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Isaac James Cullin - British, 1881-1920 Bayardo in the Paddock at Epsom Watercolor 10" x 14" Signed, Inscribed "Bayardo" and "Epsom," dated 1909 Cullin Bayardo in the Paddock at Epsom Considered by many to be one of the greatest horses ever to grace the British turf, Bayardo had a rare ability to compete at almost any distance; from a sprint to a 2½-mile grind, Bayardo could do it all. Boasting an impressive record of 22 wins in 25 starts, Bayardo won some of England’s biggest races including the coveted St. Leger Stakes. He began his career by taking the New Stakes at Royal Ascot and continued his winning form throughout his 2-year-old season, adding the Breedersc Produce Stakes, the Richmond Stakes, the Buckenham Stakes, the Rous Memorial Stakes, the Middle Park Plate, and the Dewhurst Plate. Bayardo’s 2-year-old racing career was a perfect seven for seven. His 3-year-old season saw Bayardo lose in both the 2,000 Guineas and the Epsom Derby due to injury and other external factors. After the disappointing losses, Bayardo found his form and won 11 races in a row, including the Prince of Wales’s Stakes, the Sandringham Foal Stakes, the Eclipse Stakes, and the St. Leger Stakes. In his 4-year-old season he won the Ascot Gold Cup, the Biennial Stakes at Newmarket, and the Chester Vase. His career earnings amounted to £44,535. Bayardo’s race distances ranged from five furlongs to 2 1/2 miles, showing not only his great speed but also his versatility. With his very impressive record on the turf, Bayardo was instantly popular as a sire, standing at his trainer’s Manton Stud. His stud fee soon rose to 300 guineas. Bayardo was champion sire in 1917 and 1918, and leading broodmare sire in 1925. He produced three classic winners, two of whom went on to win the English Triple Crown: Gainsborough, winner of the 1918 English Triple Crown and sire of four classic winners, and Gay Crusader, winner of the 1917 English Triple Crown. His other progeny include Bayuda, winner of the Oaks. His granddaughter Saucy Sue, put him on the top of the “sire of broodmares” list by winning the 1,000 Guineas, the Oaks, and the Coronation Stakes.

CYLLENE 1900 by Isaac Cullin (British, 1859–1942)

        Est: $10,000 - $15,000

Oil on canvas, 20” x 27 ¼” Signed, dated 1900 Provenance: Arthur Tooth & Sons, London Sir John Musker, Shadwell Park, Near Thetford Cambridge Fine Art In hindsight, owner and breeder Charles Day Rose probably regretted not entering his colt Cyllene in the 1898 British classics. Foaled in late May and small to boot, Cyllene appeared unlikely to mature enough to compete at that level. And yet some regarded Cyllene as one of the best of his generation. As a juvenile, he won the most valuable race for 2-year-olds — the National Breeders’ Produce Stakes. At 3, he won the Newmarket Stakes in the spring and the Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket in the fall. Cyllene stood at Hardwicke Stud and Egerton Park in England before being exported to Argentina in 1908. He was champion sire in England and Ireland in 1909-10 and in Argentina in 1913.

Cullin, Isaac -"Polymelus" & "Pretty Polly..."

        Est: $3,000 - $5,000

“Polymelus” & “Pretty Polly, Cicero & Bachelor’ s Button” (a pair), 1906 It stands to reason that Polymelus, the leading Thoroughbred sire in Great Britain and Ireland for the years of 1914, 1915, 1916, 1920, and 1921, would have a lasting effect on the breed. Through his son Phalaris, leading sire of 1925 and 1928, we have such names as Northern Dancer, Bold Ruler, Native Dancer, Nasrullah, Tom Fool, Mr. Prospector, Hail to Reason, and more in pedigrees today. The skeleton of Polymelus is on display at the University of Cambridge Museum of Zoology. Among noted upsets in race finishes the 1906 Ascot Gold Cup remains on the list. Going to the starter was Major Eustace Loder’s Pretty Polly under jockey Bernard Dillon at unheard-of odds of 4-to-11. The accomplished Pretty Polly had already been victorious in 22 of 23 starts. She made a valiant effort, feeling the whip for one of the few times in her career, but at the end of 2½ miles Bachelor’s Button had her by a length. Epsom Derby winner Cicero finished badly and was unplaced. Pretty Polly lived to the age of 30 and became one of the breed’s foundation producers.

In 1905 he built Belmont Park racetrack in Elmont, on Long Island which operates to this day as the largest thoroughbred racing facility in the state. Three times, horses from August Belmont, Jr.'s stable won the Belmont Stakes, the first coming in 1902 followed by back-to-back wins in 1916 and 1917. Belmont, Jr. had horses competing in England and in 1908 his American-bred colt Norman III won a British Classic Race, the 2,000 Guineas.
