    • John Closterman,  Portrait of a young man, standing half-length in a landscape, holding a flintlock
      Jul. 19, 2023

John Closterman,  Portrait of a young man, standing half-length in a landscape, holding a flintlock

      Est: £5,000 - £8,000

John Closterman,  German / English 1660-1711-  Portrait of a young man, standing half-length in a landscape, holding a flintlock;  oil on canvas, 128.5 x 105.4 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  We are grateful to Dr Malcolm Rogers for confirming the attribution of the present work and for suggesting a date of c.1700.  Closterman (anglicised from ‘Kloosterman’) was born in Germany and is thought to have arrived in England in 1681, following the death of the court painter Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680). He went on to develop a strong reputation as one of London's leading portraitists in the late 17th century, depicting royalty, nobility and key society figures of the period. This finely painted portrait was painted in c.1700, towards the end of Closterman's life, during which time he was maintaining a successful portrait painting practice and employed at least one assistant. The subject, with the young man standing in an open landscape and holding a flintlock shotgun, was favoured by Closterman.  Interestingly, the present work visually articulates the development of the modern three-piece suit of a jacket, waistcoat, and breeches. The sitter’s gleaming pale blue jacket is fitted to the waist and falls out into full folds, allowing freedom of movement. The large, loose sleeves reveal the full sleeves of the shirt, which billow from the tight cuffs. The left sleeve of the sitter’s gold brocaded waistcoat peeks through the large cuffs of his jacket – an example of a waistcoat with sleeves before they were later jettisoned in the middle of the 18th century. The waistcoat is lined with a luxurious light blue fabric, and the jacket’s lining matches the waistcoat’s gold brocade fabric of a fleshy foliate pattern.  The full linen cravat emulates the fashionable shape known as a ‘Steinkirk’ whereby the two ends are twisted together, and one end is tucked through the buttonhole to secure. This style of cravat was fashionable among both men and women at the end of the 17th century and throughout the early 18th century. The loose folds of material that comprise the cravat are echoed in the excess of fabric throughout the costume, particularly in the cuffs of the shirt and jacket. It may come as no surprise that Closterman was employed as a drapery painter during his early career in England. Captured in rich brushstrokes, the luxurious folds of fabric throughout the cravat are executed with an expert eye.  Framing the cravat, the sitter’s curls cascade in thick ringlets. However, there is no doubt that this young man’s fine head of hair is not his own. Throughout most of the 18th century, wig-wearing signified gentility. Indeed, specific styles and fashions were ever-changing, and each decade brought with it a new look. During the first decade of the 18th century, when this portrait was painted, wigs were truly the height of fashion – symbolically and literally, as it was during this time that wigs reached their maximum height. The presence of pentimenti around the sitter’s head here is suggestive of the artist’s reworking of the exact outline at the crown. The two tall peaks at the top of the head are separated by a pronounced central parting, a style that was particularly popular at this date. We are grateful to Jacqui Ansell, Senior Lecturer Christie’s Education, for her commentary on men’s fashion which has been incorporated into this catalogue note.

JOHN CLOSTERMAN (GERMAN 1660-1711)PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN, C. 1702Oil on canvas127 x 101.5cm (50 x 39¾ in.)Provenance:Collection of S. Poyntz-Wright JP Private Collection, SpainJohn Closterman was born in 1660 in Osnabrück, then part of the Holy Roman Empire. Closterman's father was an artist and would have given his son a basic training. It was not until 1679 when Closterman travelled to Paris and worked under the Court artist François de Troy that he began to hone his skills as a portrait painter. In 1680, following the death of Sir Peter Lely, Closterman arrived in London where he was soon employed by John Riley as a painter of draperies. After the death of Riley in 1691, the demand for Closterman's works soared and by the late 1690s he appears to have enjoyed a position amongst the most distinguished literary and artistic circles. In 1696, Closterman was invited to Spain where he was patronised by the court and painted full-length portraits of Carlos II and Maria Ana of Neuberg. He then went from Madrid to Rome where he collected old master drawings and expanded his knowledge of classical antiquities. On his return to England in 1702, his demand amongst the nobility had increased further as a result. This portrait can be dated to the early 1700s, shortly after Closterman returned from Madrid and Rome in 1702. The sitter's richly embroidered coat, detailed with flashes of lapis lazuli lining is typical of Closterman's grand English baroque style and shows the artist's enormous skill at recreating draperies in a truly unique manner, setting him apart from the more generalised draperies of artists such as Lely and Kneller.

Provenance: Anonymous sale; Sotheby's, London, 21 March 1956, lot 82, as Dobson. (£15 to Easton) Anonymous sale; Christie's, London, 24 July 1981, lot 128, as John Baptist Closterman (£850). Literature: (possibly) G. Vertue, Notebook, i.22. George Vertue  (1684-1756) was an engraver and antiquarian who produced an invaluable series of notebooks with information concerning English artists. He noted ‘Mr John Closterman his picture painted by himself in the hands of Mr Cope. Another in the possession of Mr Tiburin.’ These self-portraits have been presumed lost, perhaps until now. The present lot is dated in Closterman’s oeuvre to c.1690, when the artist would have been thirty years old. The self-confidence of the sitter and sense of immediacy combined with the composition make a compelling argument for a self-portrait. The broad and spontaneous handling suggest that this portrait was not a commission, but rather for personal use or for someone close to the painter. It can also be compared to Sir Godfrey Kneller’s (1646-1723) self-portrait, in his own hair, of c.1685 in the National Portrait Gallery, London. Kneller was London’s most successful portrait painter of the time, it is therefore likely that Closterman was familiar with his self-portrait. The position of the left hand echoes a further Kneller self-portrait, in a wig, of c.1688-90 (engraved Pieter Schenk, National Portrait Gallery, London), which in turn may derive from a self-portrait by Sir Anthony Van Dyck (Private Collection on loan to the Rubenshuis) ‘with his left hand at his breast’, which was last recorded in the Royal Collection in 1688 (Sir Oliver Millar in Barnes, De Poorter, Millar and Vey, Van Dyck a Complete Catalogue of the Paintings, 2004 IV A2).

PORTRAIT OF MRS RICHARD JONES measurements note 237 by 147 cm., 93¼ by 58 in. full length, standing, wearing a blue dress and a red cloak oil on canvas PROVENANCE By descent from the sitter to her son, William Jones of Ramsbury Manor; By descent to Elizabeth, his daughter, who married Francis Burdett; By descent to Sir Francis Burdett, 5th Bt, their son; By descent to Sir Francis Burdett, 7th Bt., Ramsbury Manor, by whose executors sold, Sotheby's, 2nd December 1953, lot 55 LITERATURE Malcolm Rogers, 'John and John Baptist Closterman: A Catalogue of his Works', Walpole Society, Vol XLIX, 1983, no. 53, p.250 NOTE The present picture and the following lot portray Mr and Mrs Richard Jones of Ramsbury Manor, Wiltshire. These magnificent portraits hung at Ramsbury until 1953. Ramsbury Manor was an elegant house built in Renaissance style between 1681-83 by Sir William Jones. Robert Hooke, one of the principal assistants of Sir Christopher Wren, has long been attributed as the architect of the East and West elevations of the Manor, a theory supported by the numerous references to Sir William Jones in Hooke's diary (see Country Life, 23rd January 1975, pp.194-195). The house was built on an earlier house constructed in 1560, which had belonged to the Earls of Pembroke, and from as early as the thirteenth century the Bishops of Salisbury had a park and a palace at Ramsbury Manor. Sir William Jones was a talented barrister, and served as a KC, as well as Attorney-General, 1675-79. On his death in 1682 the estate eventually passed to his nephew, Richard Jones (see next lot) who was returned as a Tory M.P. for Marlborough in 1712. The estate then passed to their son, William Jones, whose son, was "cut off at the early age of 22 on 7th of April 1766 whilst on his Travels, at Besancon", and Ramsbury Manor eventually passed to his daughter, Elizabeth, who married Francis Burdett. It was their son, Francis, 5th Bt., who inherited the baronetcy from his grandfather. Sir Francis Burdett served as an M.P. for Boroughbridge in Yorkshire, and was considered a radical politician. He was a reformist and a humanitarian, and campaigned on issues such as the abolition of slavery. He also led the campaign for an independent enquiry into the Peterloo massacre.
