Portrait of William Keith, 8th Earl Marischal (c. 1664-1712), three-quarter-length, in a purple coat, a white stock and a brown mantle with gold trim, holding a baton and leaning on a plinth
with partly erroneous inscription 'William/9th Earl Marichal/Na 1635. 0B 1712' (upper right) , and 'William 9th Earl Marischal who died in the year 1712....' (on a label on the reverse)

Presumably by descent to Lady Mary Keith, wife of the 6th Earl of Wigton and mother of Lady Clementina Fleming, wife of Charles, 10th Baron Elphinstone;

The sitter, a keen supporter of the Jacobite cause, married Mary, daughter of James Drummond, 4th Earl of Perth, circa 1690. He was succeeded by his son George, also a staunch Jacobite, as 9th Earl Marischal (1693-1778).
