JOHN GADSBY CHAPMAN American (1808-1890) "Sorrento" oil on canvas, signed with artist's monogram, dated and inscribed lower right "JC 1872 Roma," signed, titled, dated and inscribed on the reverse "For Charles Crocker, Esq., Sacramento, CA, Rome 1872" 37 x 59 3/4 inches (oval) Provenance: Private Collection, Switzerland; By descent to the current owner, Private Collection, New York. Other Notes: Most famed for creating one of the four monumental murals commissioned for the United States Capitol Rotunda (Baptism of Pocahontas, 1840), John Gadsby Chapman was also well-known for his landscapes of Italy's Campania region, where he lived for many years. Chapman was born in Alexandria, Virginia and studied locally with the artists George Cooke and Charles Bird King before his formal studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He first became enamored with the Italian coast and its peoples when he lived in Rome from 1828-1831, studying classical painting and drafting techniques. Following his time in Rome, Chapman lived and worked in in Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia before settling in New York in 1834. He became a highly successful illustrator and painter, earning full academician status at the National Academy of Design. In the 1840s, he was given the Capitol Rotunda commission as well as the project of creating over 1,400 engravings for Harper's illuminated edition of the Bible (The Illuminated Bible, 1846). He also authored a highly popular instructional book on drawing for both amateurs and professionals titled The American Drawing Book (1847). Despite his artistic success in New York, Chapman experienced some financial woes and heartbreaking family losses during these years. In 1848, he returned to Italy with his remaining family, living first in England, Paris, and Florence before settling in again in Rome in 1850. Up until the American Civil War, Chapman was very successful at painting scenes of the Campania coast for the constant flow of tourists and Grand Tour travelers who made their way through Italy. Unfortunately, the war years put a damper on this flow of travelers and in the 1860s Chapman again found himself in difficulties. He persevered for many years, but finally returned the United States in 1884 where he lived in New York with his sons Conrad Wise Chapman and John Linton Chapman. Both sons also became painters. Chapman died in New York in 1890. A similar, smaller work with the same view of the present example is currently held in The Johnson Collection in Spartanburg, South Carolina, dated 1870 and titled The Bay of Naples. Sorrento is inscribed to Charles Crocker of Sacramento, California and dated 1872 which places the painting in the famous railroad family's possession, possibly having been painted for Charles Crocker by request. The setting is an idyllic long view of the Amalfi Coast facing north to Vesuvius. A beautifully detailed pastoral scene on the right highlights the breathtaking cliffside road traversed by a herd of goats and their caretakers. The deceptively calm blue waters of the Bay of Naples rest under a faintly smoking Vesuvius in the distance. The full scene encapsulates the very heart of the region with Vesuvius's remarkable presence against the jewel-like beauty of the Amalfi Coast and its everyday activities - a perfect memento of the region by a 19th century painter renowned in his time. tags: European, Volcano, Vesuvius, Bay of Naples, oil painting, 19th century, Grand Tour

    • John Gadsby Chapman O/C, Slain Hart or Deer
      Jul. 30, 2016

John Gadsby Chapman O/C, Slain Hart or Deer

      Est: $500 - $600

John Gadsby Chapman (American, 1808-1889) oil on canvas painting depicting a slain hart or deer on a rock, its eyes still open and tongue hanging out, left front leg barely touching a stream before it and foliage in the background. Image based on a stanza from "Hart-Leap Well" by William Wordsworth, first published in Lyrical Ballads, Volume II, 1800. Inscription of stanza from poem en verso. Housed in gilt carved frame. Sight - 28 3/4" H x 39 1/4" W. Framed - 37 3/4" H x 48 1/4" W. Provenance: The estate of Jean A. Yeatman and Harry C. Yeatman, formerly of Hamilton Place Plantation (near Columbia, Tennessee). Biography (courtesy The Johnson Collection): John Gadsby Chapman was born in Alexandria, Virginia. He studied with local artists George Cooke and Charles Bird King, at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and in Europe, where he copied Old Masters and learned classic drafting techniques. Upon returning to America, Chapman became a landscape painter and portraitist, working in Alexandria, Washington DC, Richmond and Philadelphia. In 1834 he moved to New York and earned success as an illustrator and history painter. Perhaps his best known work is The Baptism of Pocahontas, a mural commissioned for the Rotunda in the U.S. Capitol and widely reproduced in period prints. In the 1840s, following the death of two of his young children, he and his family moved to Rome. Chapman remained there until 1884, painting scenes for the Grand Tour trade. HIs sons, Conrad Wise Chapman and John Linton Chapman, also became painters. Note: according to John F. McGuigan Jr., co-author (along with Mary K. McGuigan) of "John Gadsby Chapman: America's First Artist Etcher, " this work was likely painted by Chapman circa 1858 in Rome. The subject of a slain deer appears in multiple works by Chapman, and was likely commissioned by the Yeatmans during a visit to his studio. One of those works is referred to in an 1898 letter from John Linton Chapman to to Granville G. Valentine of Richmond, Virginia, stating " My father finished it at the request of his old friend William Cullen [Bryant] and called it the 'Hart Leap Well' after WadsworthÌs poem. How it happened is about as follows. My father was engaged several years painting four large allegorical pictures of the four seasons - three months represented in each picture - as accessories to the figure representing September in the Autumn picture he introduced the Wild Boar, the Deer, and other game. Being a hunter himself and a remarkable good shot, he hoped to be able to kill the Deer he required for the pictures, as he had already shot the Wild Boar and painted it. One morning as he was about starting to work at his easel, this beautiful specimen of the Roe Deer was sent in to him - having been killed a few hours before by one of his friends, an English sculptor - Holme Cardwell [1813Ò1895] a short distance from Rome. He at once placed the animal in the painting as he wanted it - and as it was yet warm - he set a basin of water under its mouth, from which the blood was still dripping. While at work at the study, William Cullen Bryant came in - as it was his habit to call to see my father every day. On seeing the Deer - its pose - the dripping blood - led him to exclaim 'Why Chapman, what a beautiful illustration you have of WadsworthÌs poem of the Hart Leap Well, ' quoting the poem, etc. Father finished the study as a picture, calling it The Hart Leap Well. " (Case wishes to thank John F. McGuigan Jr. and Mary K. McGuigan for this information). (Additional high-resolution photos are available at www.caseantiques.com)

O/B Peyton Falls, VA by John G. Chapman 1863

      Est: $2,000 - $4,000

Description: Oil on board by John Gadsby Chapman (December 3, 1808 â€" November 28, 1889). Inscribed verso "Peyton Falls, Alleghany (sic, by today's standards, now called Falling Spring Falls ) County, Virginia, Painted by John G. Chapman, American Artist, 135 via del Babaino, Rome, 1863”. Later inscribed â€aeJohn L.(Lewis) Peyton from ?? Peyton”. Source art for the engraving of the same work that appeared in the London Times in 1864. This work descended in the Peyton family to the present consignor. John L. Peyton had a home facing Peyton Falls now called Falling Spring Falls. An account from his book states that he was expecting to spend the summer of 1861 at his home there but the Civil War would interrupt his expected respite. Later that same year he would travel aboard the Confederate 'Nashville' to London where he remained until later living on the Isle of Guernsey. This painting was likely the result of his commissioning the artist to portray his beloved Peyton Falls. Artist's Colourman label of Charles Roberson & Co. 99 Long Acre, London remains on the verso and establishes this painting by Chapman with the Peyton stay in London. Peyton Falls, in Virginia,br>The Illustrated London News, vol. 45, no. 1291, p. 575. December 10, 1864PEYTON FALLS, IN VIRGINIA.We have engraved on another page a sketch, by an amateur artist (he was already by this time a member of the National Academy in New York of Peyton Falls, in the Alleghany [sic] Allegheny Mountains, Western Virginia. This romantic and beautiful cascade is on the Falling Spring, a brook tributary to Jackson's River. It is situated in the district or township which was once known as West Augusta, a place remarkable for the courage and patriotism of its inhabitants. This is the place to which Washington referred when he said, in the darkest days of the American Revolution, "Give me but a banner, and I will plant it upon the mountains of West Augusta, and rally around me the men who will raise our bleeding country from the dust and set her free!" Stonewall Jackson, the hero of the present unhappy civil war, as well as many officers of his immortal brigade, was a native of this district. It was near Peyton Falls, indeed, that one of the first battles of the civil war occurred--that of Rich Mountain, in which fell General R. S. Garnett. Material: oil on board Maker/Artist: John G. Chapman Date: 1863 Provenance: Peyton Family Size of Artwork: H 12 x W. 8" Weight (LBS) 3 Condition: Some restoration to the corners of the board verso, (see images) with corresponding in-paint to the obverse, less than 1 square inch total. Other extremely minor touches in the sky. History: Life and careerJohn Chapman was born in 1808 in Alexandria, Virginia. Chapman began his study of art in Philadelphia for two years, then departed for Europe where he eventually spent time in Italy. In 1831, Chapman returned to his hometown of Alexandria, and exhibited his artwork in the nearest metropolitan areas, such as Washington, D.C., Richmond, and Philadelphia. He specialized in landscapes and portraits.By 1834, Chapman had moved to New York City and become a member of the National Academy of Design, and found work as an illustrator. In New York, Chapman embarked on a series of historic paintings, such as Landing at Jamestown and the 'Crowning of Powhatan. The success of these paintings helped Chapman land a commission from the United States Congress in February 1837 to paint a historical scene for the rotunda of the Capitol building. For this work, Chapman received a total payment of $10,000. On November 30, 1840, The Baptism of Pocahontas was formally unveiled in the Capitol rotunda. On the swell of this success, Chapman moved his family to Rome, and made an earnest living selling paintings of rural Campagna to American visitors. However, at the onset of the American Civil War, the tourist industry dried up, affecting Chapman's fortunes greatly. In addition, Chapman's own son, Conrad Wise Chapman, returned to America to fight on the side of the Confederate States of America. The economic deprivation inflicted on Chapman during the 1860s became insurmountable. In Rome, he was forced to live off the kindness of fellow expatriates, and finally returned to America, sick and poor, to spend his last days with another son, John Linton Chapman, in Brooklyn, New York. It was there, in 1889, that he died a pauper.
