Along with Gordon Rayner and Robert Markle he was one of the youngest members in the renowned Isaacs Group of artists active in Toronto. It is likely that Burton saw the first Painters 11 exhibition in February 1954 at Roberts Gallery and through this developed a great admiration for the work of William Ronald. Burton’s education commenced at the University of Southern California (1955). Both his life and Rayner’s were altered immeasurably upon seeing a January 1955 exhibition of the work of Michael Snow and Graham Coughtry held at Hart House, University of Toronto. He continued studies at the Ontario College of Art (graduating in 1956) and worked at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Toronto as a senior graphic designer from 1957 to 1960. He would have seen the 1957 Painters 11 exhibition held at Park Gallery, Toronto, too. Having metabolised all these formative influences, Burton declared that he was dedicated to painting solely abstract paintings. He stayed true to this pledge through 1962, the year of this exquisite abstraction. Its size, 48 by 48 inches, was his preferred square format and about the largest work that he made 1958-62. It reflects his awareness and appreciation for the work of Robert Motherwell, Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning and members of second generation Abstract Expressionism.Burton taught painting and drawing at the Ontario College of Art (1970-1971), was Director of the New School of Art (1971-1977) and President of Art’s Sake (1977-1978), taught at the Banff School of Fine Arts (1974), University of Lethbridge (1976 & 1989) and the Emily Carr College of Art (1980-1999). His work is in many public and private collections among them: National Gallery of Canada, Art Gallery of Ontario, Vancouver Art Gallery, University of Lethbridge, Glenbow Museum, and Robert Mclaughlin Gallery.Estimate: $6,000–8,000

At the time, this was not a style widely embraced by the Toronto art college's administration or faculty (see lot 99). Joan Murray quotes the following anecdote recalled by Burton: "(Macdonald) told my parents who had come for my graduation in May 1956, that regardless of my final marks, I was the best painter he had encountered since Bill Ronald and that I should be encouraged to continue painting. He said I had 'it'."Indeed, Macdonald had such faith in Burton's potential that he submitted his name for a Guggenheim fellowship which the artist was actually awarded. Due to an unfortunate case of misplaced correspondence, Burton did not know he had been chosen and never used the award. Ronald (see lot 96) and Coughtry (see lot 112) were also awarded this prestigious fellowship the same year. After graduating from art school in 1956, Burton struggled to establish a personal direction for his art. Following many visits to New York and closely considering the work of artists such de Kooning and Tworkov, by 1958 Burton’s own approach to abstraction was established. David Burnett interprets Burton’s abstracts as, “seeking to deal with the issues between a tightly organized structure and a free, gestural handling of paint.”The title of this work may refer to “Old Man River Bridge” in Fort Macleod, a landmark that Burton would have seen on his trips back home to Lethbridge, Alberta.Estimate: $7,000–9,000

I see lines, I see edges, I see abstraction. I don’t see the trees to reproduce them the way they are. I see a pattern of grey-scale changes from black through to white; I see a tonal set-up… The grey-scale tonal effect of parts in shadow, in half-shadow, and the parts that are being hit by brilliant sunlight, create a texture for me – a surface. I see two-dimensionally. Everything is surface…”

As Denise Leclerc observed, "The large, square paintings on hardboard from 1958...have the same complex composition of interweaving forms as seen in de Kooning's works of this period." In Edge, coloured forms amass - generating a perspective that makes the viewer feel as though they are standing on a breathtaking precipice.

Joan Murray writes that "in 1955 Dennis Burton and Gordon Rayner saw a show that electrified them of [William] Ronald's work at the University of Toronto's Hart House Gallery; over a bottle of wine in the apartment they shared [Burton was only 22 years of age and Rayner only 20], they vowed to paint abstractly for ever more." Burton was part of the exceptional roster of artists who exhibited regularly at the Isaacs Gallery.

Following William Ronald's first one-man show at the Hart House Gallery in Toronto in 1954, Burton recalled being so excited by what he saw that he and fellow artist Gordon Rayner returned to their studio vowing never to paint representational artwork again (although Burton did later return to representational work, becoming renowned for his Garterbeltmania series in 1965). Burton, who played saxophone, was one of the founding members of the Artists' Jazz Band which played at The Isaacs Gallery. Playing in the band was important for Burton and his fellow artist-musician colleagues such as Richard Gorman, Graham Coughtry, Nobuo Kubota and Robert Markle. Jazz was a language that they shared and they regarded their artwork as being parallel to jazz improvisation. Completely non-figurative, except for the title, this stunning work reads like the free jazz of the late 1950s and early 1960s, in which metre, beat and formal symmetry all disappear into the loose harmony of the work.

He had an affinity for lyrical Abstract Expressionism, and admired Willem de Kooning and Arshile Gorky for their mastery of colour, line and form to convey imagery. The title of the work, Cooks White, Instead of Orange, on a Tabletop Landscape contains the idea of text interplaying with visual imagery which gives insight into the colours used by the artist, the abstract idea of paint as it is applied to canvas and the dismissal of traditional landscape from his art.
