    • THOMAS W. BRETLAND (Nottingham, England, 1802-1874) Hunting. Oil on canvas.

THOMAS W. BRETLAND (Nottingham, England, 1802-1874) Hunting. Oil on canvas.

      Est: €5,500 - €6,000

THOMAS W. BRETLAND (Nottingham, England, 1802-1874) Hunting. Oil on canvas. Size: 54'5 x 74 cm; 66 x 84'5 cm. (frame). At the end of the 18th century and especially throughout the 19th century in England, the genre of animal painting developed extraordinarily. The great tradition of equestrian competitions in England, where the monarchy and the aristocracy gathered for events that went (and still go) far beyond mere sporting competition, undoubtedly encouraged the painting of horses and the specialisation of painters in this genre. The English greatly appreciated the naturalistic depiction of animals and the works were often conceived as true portraits of these racing heroes. Within the animal genre, the painting of hunts, particularly the popular foxhunting, a favourite leisure activity of the British nobility, was also of great importance. Thomas Bretland specialised in these types of painting. Originally destined for the world of commerce, in which his father was engaged, Bretland soon demonstrated his skill with his brushes, which earned him the protection of the wealthy bourgeoisie and nobility. Among his works is a portrait of a famous horse belonging to Major Burton, who took part in the Balaklava campaign, among others. In the present work the painter depicts the horses galloping at a fast pace, following the path marked out by the hounds in pursuit of the hunted game. The painter depicts a view of the English countryside with remarkable verisimilitude. It is an extensive meadow crossed by the meanders of a river, with the horizon line set relatively low, leaving ample space for the sky, as is customary in this genre. The artist is interested in the anatomy of the horses, which is remarkably well resolved, and the attitude of the various jockeys riding them.

Wicklow, who was also a renowned breeder of prize cattle and commissioned many itinerant artists to record the stock and horses at Mountainstown.Foxhunting in County Meath is a well rooted sport. Christopher Nicholson of Balrath is recorded as keeping a pack of hounds in 1723. The Meath hunt came together in the Regency period by the amalgamation of individually owned packs. In 1813 the Gerrard and Pollock packs combined and, being kept in kennels by the old castle, were known as the Clongill Hunt, with Pollock as master. With the combination of other packs, the hunt formally changed its title to ‘The Meath’ and in 1841 a committee comprising John Pollock, John Tisdall and Thomas Rothwell put the hunt into good shape and it continues merrily to this day, having become one of the most renowned hunts under the stewardship of the famous Sam Reynell who laid out coverts and brought in the best strains of hounds. John Pollock resigned after the first class season of 1845 and it seems that this picture commemorates this, being completed in his studio by Bretland the following year.Bretland was part of the tradition of English artists, starting with Fearneley and going on to Baldock, Lynwood Palmer, Munnings, Lionel Edwards and ‘Snaffles’, painting Irish hunts. It is strange that in Ireland, with its great equestrian tradition, with the exception of individuals, no native Irish school of sporting artists emerged.

Bretland, Thomas Walker - Captain Cornish, 1854

      Est: $16,000 - $18,000

CAPTAIN CORNISH, 1854 - Captain Cornish was a chestnut colt by Iago. In 1853 under the ownership of the breeder Mr. William l'Anson, of Spring Cottage, Malton, England, the three-year-old Thoroughbred placed second three times - in the Convivial Handicap at Malton with Olliver up; the Sweepstakes at Ripon with Chilman in the irons; and the Dundas Handicap at York with Chilman up. That season he also won the Brocklesby Stakes piloted by Chilman at Lincoln. In 1854 he won the Malton Handicap with Wells up listed under the ownership of G.B. Cornish, who is known to have shared partnership of another racehorse with l'Anson. The jockey in the present work is wearing l'Anson's colors of straw and green and by the inscription is identified as J.H. Peart, a jockey active during the mid-1850s, possibly at the Nottingham Racecourse.

HARE COURSING SCENES each 63x76cm.; 24½x30in. a pair, one signed, inscribed Sneinton and dated 1838 oil on canvas Quantity: 2 NOTE Hare coursing, although banned September 2005, had been traditionally practised in Britain by landowners and the nobility for centuries. The earliest record of a hare coursing club is that of the Swaffham Club, founded in 1776. In 1836 the first Waterloo Cup meeting for competitive coursing was held at Altcar, near Liverpool, two years prior to Bretland painting the present works when the sport was at its height of popularity. From 1828 Bretland obtained a number of rich and important patrons including Lord Middleton, the Dukes of Buccleuch and Montrose, Lord Chesterfield and Baron Rothschild which allowed him to travel extensively from his base in Sneinton through England, Scotland and Ireland. Famed for his portrayal of sporting scenes and images of country life, the present works are typical of Bretland's oeuvre.
