Alexander Bower (1875-1952) Watercolor and gouache on paper, signed lower left, piece measures 12 x 16 and 20.5 x 24 inches w/ frame. Piece comes from a Portland, Maine estate. An American Impressionist, Bower was born in New York, studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, and was living with his wife in Cliff Island, Maine by 1914. Despite his urban upbringing, the coast and the sea fascinated Bower. A large portion of his paintings are seascapes, particularly scenes depicting the coast of Cape Elizabeth and Cliff Island, Maine. Bower was a member of the Salmagundi Club, the Philadelphia Watercolor Club, and the Boston Society of Watercolor Painters, as well as being an associate member of the National Academy of Design. He exhibited at the Carnegie Institute, the National Academy of Design, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. His works are in the collection of the Springfield Art Museum, the Butler Art Institute, the Sweat Memorial Art Museum, the Portland Museum of Art, and the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine. Bower was not only a painter but also the Director of the Sweat Memorial Art Museum and Director of the School of Fine and Applied Art (both in Portland, Maine), a trustee at Westbrook College in Portland, Maine, and an art instructor at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine.

He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, and exhibited there and at the Carnegie Institute, the National Academy of Design (of which he was an Associate Member), and the Art Institute of Chicago. He also was director of the Sweat Memorial Art Museum and the School of Fine Applied Art, both in Portland, Maine, and an art instructor at Bowdoin College. His works are in several Maine museums.

Allen, Boonsboro, Maryland A copy of a review of an exhibition of the work of Alexander Bower at the Portland Museum of Art in the Audience section of the Maine Sunday Telegram dated May 28, 1995 is attached verso. It reads in part, "The 45 works on view show an artist pf greater range than previously imagined, who was also capable of inspired, superbly handled paintings...Probably the most outstanding composition is Bower's "Portland Harbor" (1920), a robust image that includes barges, dredges, and a tug boat at work. This is a rare work in that the work-a-day world intrudes on the natural surroundings that usually make up the sum total of the artist's vision.

Alexander Bower Seascape w/Waves Crashing on Rocks

Alexander Bower, 1875-1952, was a well know Maine artist, who lived in and around Cape Elizabeth. This painting seems to be a watercolor on artist board and is signed lower right A. Bower. The reason I say seems to be a watercolor is that in many regards it has a look of oils as well and may be a mixed media piece. On the back is an old penciled price of $125 with no title or date of the scene. Waves are crashing onto rocks with light reflecting on the water. Lots of action in this piece. Painting size is 26 1/2" wide by 19 1/2" tall, framed behind glass in what appears to be the original frame would be dimensions of 40" wide by 32" tall.
