        BLIGH (William).

Chadenat, n°527 – O'Reilly, n°553 – Hill, n°135 (originale anglaise).

London: printed for George Nicol, 1792. 4to (285 x 222 mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece, 7 engraved plates and maps (6 folding). Contemporary calf, spine with 5 raised bands, marbled endpapers. Joints cracked, cords firm, chipping to corners, some rubbing and scuffing to covers, foxing and browning, bookplates on front paste-down. FIRST EDITION of Bligh's official account of the voyage of the Bounty and one of the 'most remarkable incidents in the whole of maritime history' (Hill). This contains the first published account of the mutiny, taken from Bligh's own journals. Bligh's legendary 3,600-nautical-mile voyage in uncharted waters from Tofoa to Timor with eighteen loyal men in the Bounty's open launch is a remarkable tale of courage and survival. Provenance: Louis E. Goodman (bookplate). FIRST EDITION OF BLIGH’S OWN ACCOUNT OF THE FAMOUS MUTINY AND ONE OF THE GREAT FEATS OF NAVIGATION. After a brief preamble, Lieutenant Bligh’s narrative starts with the events of the early-morning of April 29, 1789 when he was waked at swordpoint by Fletcher Christian. Christian and the 24 man crew who mutinied against Bligh remained on board the Bounty, casting Bligh and eighteen loyal men adrift in the ship’s 23-foot launch. Over the next 45 days Bligh navigated over 4,000 miles of open water via Fiji, north along the Australian coast and through the Torres Straits to the Indonesian island of Timor. “In the course of this hazardous journey Bligh took the opportunity to chart and name parts of the unknown north-east coast of New Holland as he passed along it” (Wantrup, p 128). He faced a court-martial on his return, but was not only acquitted but also promoted to Commander: he subsequently made a second successful attempt to transport bread-fruit trees from the Pacific to the Atlantic. Hill 132; Ferguson 71; Wantrup p 61.

A Narrative of the Mutiny on Board His Majesty's Ship Bounty; and the subsequent voyage of part of the crew, in the ship's boat, from Tofua, one of the Friendly Islands, to Timor, a Dutch settlement in the East Indies. London: George Nicol, 1790. 4to (288 x 223 mm). Folding engraved frontispiece, 3 folding engraved maps. 19th-century half calf, rebacked, modern endpapers. Light spotting to text, creasing to plate and maps, binding with some old soiling to covers, corners worn. FIRST EDITION OF BLIGH'S OWN ACCOUNT OF THE FAMOUS MUTINY AND ONE OF THE GREAT FEATS OF NAVIGATION. After a brief preamble, Lieutenant Bligh's narrative starts with the events of the early-morning of April 29, 1789 when he was waked at sword-point by Fletcher Christian. Christian and the 24 man crew who mutinied against Bligh remained on board the Bounty, casting Bligh and eighteen loyal men adrift in the ship's 23-foot launch. Over the next 45 days Bligh navigated over 4,000 miles of open water via Fiji, north along the Australian coast and through the Torres Straits to the Indonesian island of Timor. "In the course of this hazardous journey Bligh took the opportunity to chart and name parts of the unknown north-east coast of New Holland as he passed along it" (Wantrup, p 128). He faced a court-martial on his return, but was not only acquitted but also promoted to Commander: he subsequently made a second successful attempt to transport bread-fruit trees from the Pacific to the Atlantic. Hill 132; Ferguson 71; Wantrup p 61.

London: George Nicol, 1790. 4° (288 x 223mm). Folding engraved frontispiece, 2 folding and one single-page map. Provenance: Reichsgraf von Veltheim (small inkstamp on title verso). FIRST EDITION of Captain Bligh's own account of the mutiny against him. Philadelphia and Dublin editions appeared in the same year. When Fletcher Christian and twenty-four crew mutinied near Tonga on the Bounty's homeward voyage, Bligh and eighteen loyal men were forced to cast off in the ship's launch. Armed only with a compass, a quadrant, and a chronometer, Bligh famously navigated over 4,000 miles of open water through Fiji, up the Australian coast and through the Torres Straits to Timor. This voyage of 45 days was spent charting and naming parts of the unknown N.E. coast of New Holland. Although he returned in 1790 to face court-martial proceedings, he was acquitted along with others. Promoted to commander, he made a second attempt to transport bread-fruit trees from the Pacific to the Atlantic. Hill 132; Ferguson 71.
