Description

A Voyage to the South Sea, Undertaken by Command of His Majesty, for the Purpose of Conveying the Bread-Fruit Tree to the West Indies, in His Majesty's Ship the Bounty; Commanded by Lieutenant William Bligh. Including an Account of the Mutiny on Board the Said Ship.... London: for George Nicol, 1792. [10], 264 pp. Illustrated with engraved frontispiece portrait of Bligh, 7 folding plates and maps. 4to (314 x 243 mm). Later half black calf over green cloth boards. Light foxing to portrait, a few stray spots, but generally a very clean, uncut copy, shelfwear to binding.

First edition, large paper copy of the official account of the Bounty expedition. It includes a somewhat revised edition of the text of Bligh's journal, but was written, edited and seen to press by James Burney under the supervision of Sir Joseph Banks during Bligh's absence from London on his second breadfruit voyage.
