Exhibited: "Picturing Palo Duro." April 15-October 8, 2006, Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, Canyon, Texas. Michael R. Grauer, Associate Director for Curatorial Affairs/Curator of Art at the museum, wrote about the painting for an article in Southwest Art magazine on the exhibition: "Dallas artist Reveau Bassett, another Reaugh student best known as a waterfowl painter today, was smitten by the Palo Duro during Reaugh sketching trips in 1930 and 1931. Beginning in pastel and in gradually increasing size, Bassett painted his The Wagon three times before his monumental version was reproduced on the cover of The Cattleman in April 1950." The Cattleman described the painting: "It is a Texas scene, typical of the Tule and Palo Duro Canyon of the Red River.....The setting is not an exact location but rather, the painting is a composition documented by many sketches made by Mr. Bassett on the occasions of his yearly visits to the Tule and Palo Duro Canyons over a period of nearly a century."

REVEAU BASSETT (American, 1897-1981) Landscape Oil on canvas 34 x 40 inches (86.4 x 101.6 cm) Signed lower left: Reveau Bassett In Sunrise, Reveau Bassett has depicted an achingly beautiful sunrise over the forests of East Texas. The water reflects the intense colors shining through haunting forms of the trees. This landscape is a fine example of this artist's work. He has created an image which captures the intense, almost mystical beauty of a Texas region which has never received as much attention from artists as the Hill Country or the western parts of the state.
