FERNANDO ALVAREZ DE SOTOMAYOR (FERROL, A CORUNA, 1875 - MADRID, 1960)

        Est: €20,000 - €25,000

Fernando Álvarez de Sotomayor (Ferrol, A Coruña, 1875 - Madrid, 1960) 'Portrait of ladies' Oil on canvas. The portrait, as can be seen in the way the fabrics, the characters, and the atmosphere have been resolved, is a masterful and exquisite example of the art of Álvarez de Sotomayor, one of the most brilliant artists of the 20th century and a pioneer of the Galician school of painting. Sotomayor, as we can read in his biography on the Museo del Prado website, was a painter and 'director of the Museo del Prado from 1921/2 to 1931 and from 1939 to 1960. He was a professor of painting and director of the School of Fine Arts in Santiago de Chile, mayor of La Coruña, he was commissioned by the Government to collect the Prado Museum's canvases which were deposited in Geneva.   He was director of the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts, and corresponding academic to those of Prussia, Havana and Lisbon, he was a member of the Academies of Fine Arts of Valladolid, Cádiz and Zaragoza, of the Hispanic Society of New York and of the Board of Trustees of the Museum of La Coruña, as well as honorary academic of the Royal Galician Academy.  He was awarded the great cross of Alfonso X the Wise, of Isabella I of Castile, of Alfonso XII, of the Crown of Italy and received the commendation of the Legion of Honour and Merit of Chile. Between 1908 and 1915, he resided in Chile, where, as the Royal Academy of History tells us, 'he generated an artistic movement that changed nineteenth-century aesthetic concepts in Chile, broadening the perspective towards costumbrist themes and initiating a renewal in the technical and stylistic concepts of painting.' After this time in Chile, when settled back in Spain, 'he created many portraits and some of his best paintings depicting Galician subjects [and] became the painter of the Court of Alfonso XIII.' Of the half-dozen portraits he made of the king, one painted circa 1940 is kept in the Prado Museum (inv. P006324). Above all, his most extensive output included portraits, along with costumbrist paintings, primarily inspired by Galicia.   Bibliographic reference: - Museo del Prado (n.d.). Fernando Álvarez de Sotomayor (Ferrol, 1875-Madrid, 1960) Muchacha en un paisaje. Óleo sobre lienzo. Firmado. "Portrait of a lady. Watercolour on paper. Signed in the lower right corner. Size: 90 x 60 cm, 103 x 73 cm (frame). The author has created a neutral and almost non-existent atmosphere that envelops the whole. Thus creating an image that oscillates between the modernity of the city and the costumbrista image and regional character provided by the dress of the woman portrayed. This type of scene was common in the production of the Galician artist, who used his fellow countrymen as the undisputed protagonists of his work, thus raising the values of nationalism and exalting the cultural idiosyncrasies of Galicia, in many cases symbolised by a female figure, as can be seen in this work, in the painting La Mariñana, which belongs to the BBVA collection. Fernando Álvarez de Sotomayor studied at the Royal Augustinian College of El Escorial and then tried his hand at various careers before finally devoting himself to painting. He began his artistic training as a pupil of Manuel Domínguez, with whom he collaborated in the decoration of the staircase and an office of the Ministry of Agriculture in Madrid. In 1899 he obtained a grant to further his studies at the Spanish Academy in Rome, where he became thoroughly acquainted with the Renaissance and Baroque painting of the Florentine, Roman and Venetian schools. He subsequently travelled to Holland, where he discovered the painting of Frans Hals, whose strong colouring and impastoed brushstrokes would mark his later works. His triumphs began in his youth, and in 1904 he won the second medal at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts, and the first two years later, in 1906. In 1908 he moved to Santiago de Chile to teach at the Chilean School of Fine Arts. He was director of that institution in 1911, and the so-called "Generation of 1913" or "Sotomayor Generation" grew up around him. During these years he continued to send works to official European exhibitions, being awarded a bronze medal in Liège and a gold medal in Munich in 1909. He was also awarded prizes at the International Exhibitions in Barcelona in 1907 and Buenos Aires in 1910, and was decorated at the National Exhibition in Madrid in 1912. He returned to Spain in 1918, after being appointed deputy director of the Prado Museum. Between 1921/22 and the advent of the Republic he held the post of director of that institution, regaining it after the Civil War. In 1922 he was appointed a member of the San Fernando Royal Academy and in 1929 he was given a separate room at the Barcelona International Exhibition. He was also chamber painter to King Alfonso XIII during the last years of his reign. After the war Sotomayor was awarded the Juan March Prize (1956), and after his death important tributes were paid to him, such as the retrospective exhibition held at the Palacio de Velázquez del Retiro on the occasion of the centenary of his birth. Sotomayor is currently represented in the Museo del Prado, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, and other leading Spanish, European and American museums.

FERNANDO ÁLVAREZ DE SOTOMAYOR (Ferrol, La Coruña, 1875 - Madrid, 1960). "Washerwoman". Oil on canvas. With restorations. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 115 x 115 cm. Image of costumbrista character that presents a woman on her knees, concentrated in her task, totally foreign to the spectator. Next to her we can observe a scene dominated by a still life which has a great presence in the scene, as it helps to determine the subject providing more veracity to the scene, as well as being an example of the mastery of the artist who portrays the different qualities of the elements in a masterly way through a loose and fast brushstroke. The author has created a vaporous atmosphere that envelops the whole. Thus creating an image that oscillates between the modernity of the city and the traditional, regional image provided by the clothing of the woman portrayed. PROPERTY FROM A SOUTH AMERICAN PRIVATE COLLECTION RETRATO DE TERESA WILMS MONTT 119 by 109.5cm., 46¾ by 43in. dated 1908 l.l. oil on canvas PROVENANCE Acquired by the family of the present owner from the artist; thence by descent NOTE Sotomayor's model is the independent-spirited Chilean feminist writer and poet Teresa Wilms Montt (Viña del Mar 1893-1921 Paris). Restless by nature, her brief and unhappy marriage lasted until 1916, when she left Santiago for Buenos Aires, leaving her two daughters in the care of her father-in-law. In the Argentinian capital she immersed herself in bohemian artistic circles and published her first elegiac book Inquietudes sentimentales before moving to Spain in 1918. Here she befriended the novelists Ramón Gómez de la Serna, Enrique Gómez Carrillo, and the dramatist and novelist Ramón del Valle-Inclán, and became the muse of Sotomayor who quickly fell for her energetic yet enigmatic charm. Teresa became a doyenne of the Madrid literary scene, publishing En la inquietud del mármol with a prologue by Gómez-Carillo, and Anuarí prefaced by Valle-Inclán. She was briefly re-united with her daughters in Paris in the early 1920s where she died in her prime after a brief illness. The authenticity of the work has been confirmed by Sotomayor's son in a certificate dated 28 August 2005. Fig. 1, Photograph of Teresa Wilms Montt, the sitter in the present work
