      Attrib. Francis Alexander,Connecticut, Italy,1800-1880 Titled "Portrait of Mrs. Samuel B. Swett", depicts a seated woman with rosy cheeks and browns eyes with a lacy veil covering her hair. Alexander was a leading portrait artist of the 19th Century, studying under Alexander Robertson and Gilbert Stuart. One of Alexander's most notable subject was Charles Dickens who sat for a portrait in 1842. Oil on canvas,Canvas 31 1/2" x 25",Frame 40" x 35 1/8" Marked "Alexander, F. Portrait of Mrs. Samuel B. Swett hent by Miss Mary C. Swett" on verso, labeled "Mary Sheafe (LOW) Swett, daughter of Dr. Nathaniel Low and Mary Ann (Hale) Low born March 21, 1823 (So. Berwick, Me.) Died Nov. 1, 1893 (Jamaica Plain, Mass.) Painted by Francis Alexander (Whose wife, Lucia Swett Alexander, was Dr. Swett's sister)" on verso, includes partial museum label on verso. From the collection of a Cumberland, Rhode Island gentleman.

      Attributed to Francis Alexander (American, 1800-1880) Portrait of Revolutionary War Officer Derick Lane (1755-1831) of Troy, New York. Unsigned, artist and subject identified on a plaque below. Oil on panel, 30 x 23 1/2 in., in a period molded giltwood frame. Condition: Scattered retouch. Note: Derik Lane enlisted as a private on the onset of the American Revolution at the age of twenty-one and rose in rank serving seven years and in many capacities to colonel of the regiment formed in the Troy area of New York. He participated in several battles without sustaining injuries, among them are the battle at White Plains, the Elk in Pennsylvania, the battle of Brandywine, Monmouth, Long Island, Ash Swamp, Scotch Plains, Springfield, and Yorktown. He was awarded membership of the Society of the Cincinnati in 1784 after leaving the army and entered the mercantile business in Troy, New York, expanding his business interests by purchasing real estate and erecting several buildings and his involvement in furthering Troy's political and commercial interests.

Housed in its original oval gesso decorated painted frame. Label on reverse from the "Saint Botolph Club Portrait Exhibition January 3, 1905. Item No. 55. Leant by a member of the Chandler Family". The Club is located in Boston, MA and still in operation.
