Attributed to Francis Alexander (American, 1800-1880)

Portrait of Revolutionary War Officer Derick Lane (1755-1831) of Troy, New York. Unsigned, artist and subject identified on a plaque below. Oil on panel, 30 x 23 1/2 in., in a period molded giltwood frame. Condition: Scattered retouch.

Note: Derik Lane enlisted as a private on the onset of the American Revolution at the age of twenty-one and rose in rank serving seven years and in many capacities to colonel of the regiment formed in the Troy area of New York. He participated in several battles without sustaining injuries, among them are the battle at White Plains, the Elk in Pennsylvania, the battle of Brandywine, Monmouth, Long Island, Ash Swamp, Scotch Plains, Springfield, and Yorktown.


He was awarded membership of the Society of the Cincinnati in 1784 after leaving the army and entered the mercantile business in Troy, New York, expanding his business interests by purchasing real estate and erecting several buildings and his involvement in furthering Troy's political and commercial interests.

Condition Report

The portrait has been cleaned, and has unobtrusive scattered retouch including numerous spots on face and clothing, and then varnish making it a little difficult to see the areas of retouch to the background.
