Hart Schaffner & Marx. ca. 1910.

    Est: $1,200 - $1,500

ARTIST: SAMUEL NELSON ABBOTT (1874-1953) SIZE: 16 x 22 7/8 in./40.6 x 58 cm DESCRIPTION: A Colonial, Washington-esque figure considers a parchment scroll as attendants look on. The appeal to U.S. Federal heritage is warranted: launched in 1872 as a small men's clothing store in Chicago, Hart Schaffner & Marx quickly became a large wholesale operation, winning contracts to supply uniforms for the U.S. military. They then entered the ready-to-wear suit business, selling to department stores and fine retailers nationwide. Maneuvers such as these hinted at the company’s military roots while also presenting a standard of dignity, class, and style which was to be expected in the wearers of their clothing. Today, the company is known as Hartmarx Corp., owning both Hickey Freeman and M. Wile. During the 2008 presidential campaign, Barack Obama was known to almost exclusively wear the brand, particularly during his acceptance speech and the 2009 Inaugural Address. Hart Schaffner & Marx: Two Posters.

    Est: $1,400 - $1,700

From first glance, it's easy to see that Abbott's vibrant designs for Hart, Schaffner & Marx-the "Makers of Fine Clothes for Men"-weren't concerned in the least with showing the style of clothing available to the consumer. No, he was more concerned with setting the proper tone, showing the classical tie between fashion and society-to underscore the solid tradition and quality of the wearer and the clothes he chooses to wear. With military proposals, colonial stability and intriguing dramatics, Abbott implicitly infers that success, it would seem, as well as a certain clothing line, are two things that are never out of style.
