Metalware Decor & Accessories

Metalware, or objects made from copper, iron, brass, bronze, steel, zinc, tin, and lead, has been crucial to human civilization for millennia. In contrast to precious metals, such as gold and silver, these readily-available affordable materials have been produced and consumed by all levels of society and enjoyed as both practical and decorative pieces.

As metals are excellent conductors of heat, they have historically been the preferred material for objects used for food preparation and consumption. From North and South America to Europe and Asia, cultures worldwide have created an impressive variety of cookware, dishes, and utensils for everyday use and special occasions. Additionally, because metals are malleable and can be molded, cast, and etched with decorative designs, they have also been used extensively to create aesthetically-pleasing metalware pieces for the home such as vases, centerpieces, candlesticks, fire screens, and wall art.

Today, metalware is appreciated for its evolution throughout history and alluring, reflective surfaces. Metalware is represented in all major museums and widely available at auction.

Quick Facts

  • Artists often combine two or more metals to create an alloy that combines the best qualities of both
  • Steel, a mixture of iron and small amounts of carbon, is both durable and easy to use
  • Tin-plated iron containers, which are less susceptible to breakage than glass jars, were used by British and French armies on the move during the 19th century
