Diamond & Platinum Rings

Diamonds set in a platinum ring are among the most desirable of combinations. The unique white metal look of the platinum pairs well with the diamond and allows it to show off its unique qualities, especially when it is colorless and has a high-clarity rating.

Larger stones are also frequently, and almost exclusively, set in platinum because the rarity of the metal seems to match well with that of the diamond. Platinum diamond bands are often a preferred choice for those buying high-end engagement rings, in which single stones are often set on smooth bands.

Eternity rings are also made from platinum and diamonds. Perhaps the most famous of these, which featured baguette-cut diamonds, was the one Joe DiMaggio gave Marilyn Monroe at their wedding.

Platinum’s strong resistance to corrosion also adds to the attractiveness of the metal. Compared to gold, platinum is very rare, so a diamond and platinum ring is often an ever more cherished possession.

Quick Facts

  • Because platinum reflects light so well and does not tarnish, platinum rings maintain their quality for decades
  • Platinum is considerably heavier than gold, yet because the amount of metal used in a ring is very small, people usually do not realize the weight difference
  • Platinum also pairs well with other light-colored semi-precious gemstones
