Item Overview

Description

WV/Her Book. 1896.Architect, painter and type designer, Smith was the son of painter, Francis Hopkinson Smith. He studied architecture at Columbia University and practiced his craft largely in Paris. He also wrote and illustrated "The Real Latin Quarter" and "Budapest." Here, he culls forth a charming, but somewhat enigmatic and bittersweet image: the road to the lass is barred, so her future would seem somewhat tenuous. William Canton (1845-1926) was a British journalist and writer, best remembered for his contributions to children's literature. This includes a series of three books-beginning with The Invisible Playmate: A Story of the Unseen, followed by the title advertised here and concluding with In Memory of W. V-written for his daughter Winifred Vida (1891-1901), who tragically passed away at the age of ten.
FRANCIS BERKELEY SMITH (1868-1931)
