Lot 28: Wilhelm Richter (1824-1892), Domestic Scene, Oil, c. 1860

Condition:
The painting is in good restored condition. The inspection under UV light reveals retouches in the area of the lower edges and the figure group. The edges show the usual framing marks. The surface shows fine craquelure. The gold painting of the frame is partially rubbed. The dimensions of the panel are 41.3 x 34.1 cm. The overall dimensions, including the frame of 58 x 49.7 cm.

Wilhelm Richter (1824-1892)
Born in Vienna, the painter Wilhelm Richter was specialized in genre, hunting and military depictions. He studied at the Vienna Academy with the painters Leopold Kupelwieser, and Johann Nepomuk Ender. In 1848/49, he worked as war painter during a campaign in northern Italy, as well during a campaign in 1859. In the 1870s, Richter often went to the Imperial hunting lodge in Gödöllö near Budapest. There, he primarily painted hunting pieces. Today, several of his paintings are on display in the Military History Museum in Vienna. They illustrate those campaigns that Richter witnessed as a war painter.
