Exceptionnel buste de Jean, marquis Deydé (1617-1787) en marbre de Trets.
Daté 1684.
Provenant de la chapelle Deydé en la cathédrale de Montpellier, démantelée à la Révolution.
Socle : H : 15 cm, L : 20 cm.
Buste seul : H : 50 cm, L : 35 cm.
Inscription gravée au dos : IOANNES DEYDE 1684

Important Trest marble bust of Marquis Jean Deydé.
Sculpted in 1684 by Christophe Veyrier for the private chapel of the Marquis.

Avec la collaboration des meilleurs artistes du temps tel que Pierre Mignard, Veyrier avait contribué
à la chapelle attribuée aux Deydé en 1643 dans la cathédrale de Montpellier. Le portrait de l’épouse
du marquis Deydé, pendant de notre buste est actuellement conservé au musée Fabre de Montpellier
sous forme de moulage : Catherine d’Ortholan (1634-1687), marquise Deydé regarde également
vers l’intérieur, la tête tournée vers la gauche et est de même dimension que notre marbre. Ce moulage
de la marquise Deydé du musée Fabre est un moulage du marbre original anciennement connu
dans la collection Jean Pétin à Paris.
Notre buste et celui de la marquise Deydé qui furent réalisés pour le tombeau des deux époux encadraient
à l’origine une urne monumentale en marbre dite « urne Veyrier » bien connue des amateurs
(coll. Part.).
Sculpteur travaillant sous la direction de Pierre Puget (1620-1694) auquel ces bustes ont parfois
été attribués, Christophe Veyrier (1637-1689) obtint la commande des bustes et de l’urne destinés à
orner le tombeau réalisé pour la chapelle concédée à Jean Deydé dans la cathédrale Saint Pierre de
Montpellier et dont la transformation avait été confiée à Pierre Puget.
Ce buste demeuré inédit jusqu’aujourd’hui -quoique mentionné sur le marché de l’art entre les
deux guerres- avait néanmoins fait l’objet de trois moulages dans les années 1770-1780 pour les
héritiers de Jean et Catherine Deydé (tous comme le buste de Catherine d’Ortholan dont le plâtre
est conservé au musée Fabre).
